Captain's orders: If a sophomore can win the Heisman Trophy, then a sophomore can be elected captain at Oklahoma.

Two, actually.

Quarterback Sam Bradford and defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, a couple of sophomores from Oklahoma City, were voted co-captains on Friday.

"I voted for him," senior center Jon Cooper, also voted captain, said of Bradford. "He's a great quarterback, and he's what you think of when you think of captain."

Cooper and junior tight end Brody Eldridge were the other offensive captains, and senior safety Nic Harris was the other defensive captain.

It's believed to be the first time Sooner sophomores have been named captains since 1898, when C.C. Roberts was selected. Roberts was voted captain four consecutive seasons, according to the 2004 OU football media guide.

Last year, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow struck a blow for underclassmen everywhere when he became the first sophomore to win the Heisman. OU coach Bob Stoops, who has had a handful of junior captains, said he wasn't surprised by his players' vote.

"Hey, those guys are respected guys and work as hard as anybody we've ever had here," Stoops said. "That just tells you a lot about 'em. That's the kids voting, and that's what they think about those guys. They're our leaders. I concur."

The team submitted secret ballots before Friday's morning practice, then Stoops announced the tally before the second practice. Offensive players voted for one defensive and two offensive captains, and vice versa.

"Oh, it was great, man," Cooper said. "That was one of the best days of my life, when I found out they had voted me that. It's one of the greatest honors I've ever had.

"I just had a big grin on my face. I called my dad right after. It was a real good feeling."

Pay-per-view set: Cox announced its pay-per-view package for the Sooners' season-opener Saturday against Tennessee-Chattanooga. The game kicks off at 6 p.m. and will be carried on digital channel 610 for a cost of $29.95. The telecast is produced by FSN and the pregame show starts at 5 p.m.

Depth charges: OU released its pregame notes package on Monday, and there were some mild surprises on the depth chart.

Quentin Chaney is the No. 1 outside receiver with Juaquin Iglesias, with Manuel Johnson the top inside receiver, backed up by Ryan Broyles.

DeMarco Murray, idle all spring and much of the summer after knee surgery, is atop the depth chart at running back.

Adrian Taylor is the starter at defensive tackle ahead of DeMarcus Granger.

With Austin Box out with torn knee cartilage, Mike Balogun is the starter at weakside linebacker, backed up by Travis Lewis or Brandon Crow. Lamont Robinson is listed as the backup at strongside linebacker behind Keenan Clayton. Stoops said Box was "doubtful" against Chattanooga but was "very probable" for next week's game against Cincinnati.

Ben Hampton and James Winchester are listed 1-2 at deep snapper because returning starter Derek Shaw, who has 28 consecutive starts, is still nursing a sore Achilles' tendon.

Freshman Tress Way is listed as the backup placekicker and punter behind Jimmy Stevens and Mike Knall, respectively.
