Chaney gets the call: For all the hype surrounding freshman Ryan Broyles throughout Oklahoma's preseason camp, Quentin Chaney is listed as the starting wide receiver alongside Manuel Johnson and Juaquin Iglesias for Saturday's season opener against Chattanooga.

" 'Q' has proven he deserves that opportunity, and I think he's going to have a good year," said Jay Norvell, OU's wide receivers coach. "Everybody gets judged by the way you perform on Saturday. He needs to prove it in games, and I think he will, the way that he's practiced."

Assuming the Sooners open in a three-wide formation, Saturday will mark just the second career start for Chaney, a senior from Booker T. Washington.

"Starting is a good accomplishment," he said. "But as long as I'm able to finish the game and be on the field for four quarters, that's really where my pride will be. I'll feel good about that."

Secondary is set: Defensive backs coach Bobby Jack Wright has confirmed his starting lineup against Chattanooga — safeties Nic Harris and Lendy Holmes flanked by cornerbacks Dominique Franks and Brian Jackson. When preseason camp opened, it looked like Holmes and Jackson would man the corners with Harris at free safety and redshirt freshman Sam Proctor at strong safety. Holmes' shift to safety was prompted by both Franks' return to the form he showed last spring and Proctor's mid-camp slump.

"Sam is starting to get back to where he was at the end of spring," Wright said. "He kind of hit a lull there, hit the wall, in the middle of two-a-days. This past week he has shown signs of having an understanding of everything."

Wright likely will give Proctor some plays Saturday night. If the game turns lopsided, look for Jonathan Nelson and Jamell Fleming to spell Franks and Jackson. There is also the possibility of Holmes playing both corner and free safety.

"I'll play either position," Holmes said. "I play hard, I play physical and I play fast. It really doesn't matter where I'll be."

Murray on list: Sophomore DeMarco Murray is on the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award. The honor is presented annually to the top running back in college football. The preseason watch list announced Thursday contained 43 names.

The finalists will be announced Nov. 24, and the winner on Dec. 11.

Saying 'no' to Switzer: It takes some doing to find a connection between the Sooners and Chattanooga — the two programs have never met and don't even play at the same level (the Mocs are in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Div. I-AA). Credit, then, goes to Mark Wiedmer for coming up with a beauty.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press columnist discovered that Mocs coach Rodney Allison was once recruited by Barry Switzer before deciding to play quarterback for Texas Tech.

"It would have been an eight- or nine-hour drive for my family if I'd chosen Oklahoma," Allison told Wiedmer. "That was just too far."

It was ever harder for Allison to turn down Darrell Royal and Texas. He chose Tech over the Longhorns and Sooners and became the Southwest Conference MVP in 1976.

No tickets: OU announced Thursday that it has sold all of the tickets for Saturday's game. However, officials said they expect a few returns and exchanges on game day.

Those tickets, which will sell for $49 each, will go on sale at 1 p.m. Saturday from Gate 5 at the stadium.
