OU: Know The Foe

Looking back: Cincinnati won 10 games and finished No. 17 in the nation last year, and began 2008 with a 40-7 wipeout of Eastern Kentucky last Thursday night. The Bearcats' only problem was in the pregame festivities, when their mascot parachuted into the stadium and wound up snagged on the wire behind the goal post.

About the offense: Ben Mauk, who quarterbacked the Bearcats to their breakthrough '07 season, lost a final appeal for another year of eligbility before Thursday's game. So now it is Dustin Grutza's offense, just like it was in 2005-06, the two seasons before Mauk's arrival. Grutza got off to a strong start against Eastern Kentucky, completing 21-of-28 for 296 yards and three touchdowns out of the Bearcats' no-huddle.

About the defense: Cincinnati tied for the national lead with 42 takeaways last year, and ranked 13th in scoring defense (18.8 allowed). The Bearcats dominated Allan Holland, the Ohio Valley Conference offensive player of the year, last Thursday, limiting him to 141 passing yards, 61 of which came after the score was 40-0.

About special teams: Head coach Brian Kelly summed them up after the season opener: "Special teams stunk. I mean it was terrible." Jake Rogers missed a pair of extra points, prompting another Kelly quote: "Does anybody have a clinical degree in here? It's game day anxiety."
