NORMAN — A middle-of-the-night brawl at a Norman nightclub over last weekend resulted in the injury of at least one Oklahoma athlete.

Brenda Finkle of the Norman Regional Hospital confirmed that defensive end Frank Alexander was treated and released from the facility, after police responded to a large-scale fight at Sooner Knights at 2:32 a.m. Sunday.

Asked about Alexander after practice Monday, OU coach Bob Stoops said: "There was an incident where a couple of our athletes, overall, were assaulted."

According to a Norman Police Department release: "Numerous calls to the police department reported subjects fighting with knives, guns and tire irons. Prior to officers' arrival updated information reported that shots had been fired and that people had been shot and/or stabbed."

Alexander was apparently one of those wounded. The OU Daily student newspaper reported that OU basketball player Ray Willis was another, although Finkle could not confirm Willis' admittance into the hospital.

OU would not comment on the identities of those involved in the fight, although basketball coach Jeff Capel issued a statement saying: "I'm grateful that all of the students who were victims of a violent act received prompt attention. Obviously, we are concerned for all of the students involved."

According to the NPD: "At the time of this press release (Sunday afternoon), both stabbing victims were in stable condition, but required surgery as a result of their injuries."

Stoops,
in his portion of OU's joint statement, said: "We understand that the outlook is good."

Meanwhile, the incident is under review by the Norman Police Criminal Investigations Division.

"While the details are still emerging, indications are that those who were injured were victims of assault," athletic director Joe Castiglione said in OU's release.

Said OU president David Boren: "Even though this was an off-campus incident, I have asked the Vice President for Student Affairs and his staff to work with the department to try to prevent this kind of situation in the future."
