Stoops today: Trip to Washington was already scheduled, so OU will deal with Pac-10 refs

Listen to an eight-minute interview Monday with OU coach Bob Stoops on the Big 12 teleconference. Stoops is asked about the controversial loss to Oregon and about why OU decided to keep the Washington game on the schedule after the Pac-10 refused to alter its policy for choosing officials in nonconference games.
NORMAN — Two years ago, Oklahoma came home from Oregon bitter over treatment from Pac-10 Conference officials during a 34-33 controversy-shrouded loss. Noting that the Sooners were due to play at Washington in 2008, coach Bob Stoops went so far as to suggest his team might not honor that commitment if the Pac-10 maintained its policy of staffing home games with its own officiating crews.
“There’s no question that Joe Castiglione and I or President (David) Boren will, if that rule is not changed, that we may reconsider that game,” Stoops said then. “I think it’s justified that we look into that.”
Two years later, Pac-10 officials continue to work Pac-10 home games, and yet OU is, in fact, headed to Seattle to face the Huskies Saturday night. Asked about that during his Big 12 teleconference appearance Monday morning, Stoops said: “It was already scheduled. You know how it is trying to get games. Scheduling isn’t easy to do. Washington had already come here (the week before OU went to Oregon in 2006). So it’s living up to the agreement. We’re good with it and anxious to go play. A great, great stadium. They have a great atmosphere. You need to go meet that kind of challenge.”
As expected, Stoops downplayed any suggestion his team should be nervous about encountering that officiating situation again.
“Hey, it’s the way it is. We’re going to go play,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll play as well as we can.”
Ironically, Pac-10 officials crimped Washington’s chances to send the Huskies’ game against BYU into overtime last Saturday in Seattle. Quarterback Jake Locker scored to pull UW within 28-27 in the final seconds, then tossed the ball into the air to draw a 15-yard penalty for excessive celebration. BYU blocked Ryan Perkins’ 35-yard extra point try and escaped with victory.
Stoops said he had seen Locker’s celebration, but would not comment on it. He did say his players would be handing the ball to officials after touchdowns Saturday.
“Absolutely,” Stoops said. “We do all the time.”

We just need to make sure the game is so far out of reach that NO ref can impact the games outcome. Can I get a half a hundred?

This is a good early test to see if our road issues have been resolved. We need to lay a beat down on 'em. Half a hundred would be niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice!

Perhaps the Pac-10 Officials will be a little more fair this year knowing they are going to be under a magnifying glass. As I recall, last year the whole nation knew they took the game from us.

Typical Sooners whining about the officiating BEFORE the game is even played! While I agree the call in Oregon was Bad, it was TWO years ago! WHAH WHAH! Also it was not the last play of the game. OU could have played defense and not let them score. Ou also missed an chipshot field goal at the end to win the game. Bottom line OU and it's fans have embarrassed themselves continuing to whine about that game. OU has won more than it's share of games on controversial calls. The UAB game earlier that year comes to mind. You don't see them with headlines crying about it TWO YEARS LATER. Get over yourselves.

The only whining I see here is coming from Stillwater, Phred.

Hey SoonerBoy, stopping Oregon from getting 500 yards (including the touchdown after the bad call) and being able to kick a field goal would have solved the problem.

The media was trying to get a sound bite. I didn't see or hear Bob say
anything other than they would be taking care of what they could control
and try to play hard. As far as officals go we sure can't brag about the Big 12 crews.

Who's whining? I see an article about the press asking Stoops about Oregon fiasco, Stoops saying that OU has to worry about what OU can control, then a bunch of fans saying that we better be sure to score enough that bad calls can't effect the outcome.
And for the record, that "chip shot FG" would have been a 44 yarder. But don't let little things like the facts get in the way of a good story.
