Coming of age: Before he could go out and set Oklahoma freshman records with seven catches and 141 yards against Cincinnati last week, wide receiver Ryan Broyles had to simply get on the field. In order to do that, he had to serve his suspension from the season opener and show the maturity he didn't in 2007, when he was caught trying to steal gasoline from a Norman convenience store and redshirted as a result.

According to at least one senior teammate, Broyles is making strides both on and off the field.

"I think the main thing is him being more mature," Juaquin Iglesias said. "You could tell at the beginning (of Broyles' career), he kind of played around a lot more. Now he's focusing in and paying attention to details. He always says, 'I'm just trying to get like y'all, trying to get on the field and catch balls.' I think he realizes what he has to do."

Moreland keeping job: OU kickoff specialist Matt Moreland did not force any Chattanooga touchbacks in the opener. Last week, despite kicking with a 15 mph wind for two quarters, he forced just two touchbacks, and has given up returns on 16 of his 18 kickoffs thus far.

Still, the Bishop Kelley walk-on appears in no danger of losing his job.

"They're adequate," coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday of Moreland's kicks. "I think he's capable of more. I'm still hopeful, as he keeps ironing out his technique, that that will happen. But I don't see anyone else kicking them out all the time."

Some have suggested that Stoops try Tress Way, the Union freshman who the Sooners hope to redshirt.

"Tress does well, but not any better. At this point, anyway," Stoops said. "I'm awfully excited about Tress. But at this point, it isn't something I feel is going to be an improvement."

The right guy: While the left side of OU's offensive line, guard Duke Robinson and tackle Phil Loadholt, gets all of the award recognition, the Sooners' right tackle continues to set the bar for his line. Trent Williams was OU's most effective lineman against Cincinnati with 12 knockdown blocks.

Truth is, Williams has been OU's most effective lineman for a while.

"Last year he kind of went under the radar, but he was always one of the guys that had one of the better grades," Stoops said.
