Stoops today: Rough play is part of football, and there's no whining about Granger's injury

Audio: Listen to a five-minute interview with OU coach Bob Stoops from Monday’s Big 12 football teleconference. He talks about OU's rise to No. 2 in the football polls.

NORMAN — Indications are that Oklahoma defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger was roughed up by several Washington offensive linemen on the play in which Granger was injured during the Sooners’ 55-14 victory Saturday. Television viewers noticed, and so did OU coach Bob Stoops.

“There looked to be some of that. Unfortunate anytime any of that happens,” Stoops said during his Big 12 teleconference appearance Monday morning. “But there’s always a lot of rough and tough play inside. Nobody here is whining about it.”

Granger drew the Huskies’ wrath on the final series of the first half, when he knocked over Washington right guard Casey Bulyca after Husky tight end Kavario Middleton had flinched at the line of scrimmage. That earned Granger a 15-yard personal foul penalty to go with Middleton’s false start.

On the next play, Bulyca, center Juan Garcia and left guard Jordan White-Frisbee all drove Granger to the turf. Bulyca and White-Frisbee continued to roll over Granger as quarterback Jake Locker finished a 7-yard run downfield.

Granger put no weight on his left leg as he was helped off the field. He returned to the sideline in the second half on crutches and wearing a boot around his lower leg. Stoops indicated it was a foot injury in postgame.

Granger, who hasn’t started this year but has played significant minutes in OU’s four-man rotation at defensive tackle, will be evaluated through the week. The No. 2 Sooners do not play again until hosting TCU Sept. 27.

Tempers flared Saturday from the moment the two teams got into a shoving match in the tunnel before coming out onto the field.

“I didn’t see any of that,” Stoops said of the pregame fracas. “I didn’t notice that.”

That's how I saw that play too. They shouldn't have ganged up on him like that but that's football. He did get in a cheap shot the play right before that, which wasn't right either.

The replay was pretty clear to me. Those three Washington lineman worked him when he was out of the play (on the ground).

Where was the wing official to flag it?

I don't understand why the coaches let the skirmish happen in the tunnel either.
Who's at blame? Was OU blocking the tunnel? Or why didn't Washington wait until it was clear, instead of coming out immediately after OU?

Anyways, it was good to see our team had a pulse in the road game. I hope it means good things for this season.

You won't hear Stoops complaining, he wears big boy underwear.

What cheap ask school has both teams coming out the the same tunnel?

Good thing it didn't happen in Norman, or those guys might have had a long walk to the bus!

The Washington offensive players should have been giving center Juan Garcia a beat down instead of Granger. How many times did he bounce the snap to their QB Locker? Good grief, he looked like an overgrown Pop Warner kid.

When you take a cheap shot on a player, you can expect a retaliation. Happens all the time. Granger took the cheap shot, he paid for it. End of Story. Where were the officials? Most of the time they know the retaliation is coming and look the other way. Not right but it happens. Granger learned a lesson. Hopefully next time he has a chance to cheap shot someone he passe it by.

I simply do not understand why all the craziness was not flagged long before this..Of course I am not objective..I love OU...still this began long before the cheap shot by Granger..darn flags do not need to be kept in pockets!!
Plenty sour grapes here....poty face too...:(

They needed THREE guys to get even with Granger? What does that say about Bulyca? Weak...

I'd be doubly embarrassed if I were Casey Bulyca.

Another reason to not schedule Pac-10 schools in the future. They suck except SC, so it doesn't help our ranking and their officials are horrible and are still looking to job us. That was the only chance they had though due to the score. I don't recall ever seeing a more blatant, out in the open, full of malice personal foul. That crew should be really proud of that. Real pros. By the way, nice Cowpoke logic (referee)Phred. It's supposed to be an eye for an eye not an eye for a knee, ankle and ribcage. That PF gets called anywhere else every time even if there had been an actual cheap shot.
