OU defensive tackle opts against having immediate surgery.

University of Oklahoma defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger has decided against immediate surgery and will try to rehabilitate his injured left foot, the school announced Thursday.

OU coach Bob Stoops said he expects Granger to miss 3-4 weeks, "and then we'll just see from there."

In that scenario, Granger could be back on the field as early as Oct. 11, when the Sooners meet Texas. OU has an open date this week, followed by a Sept. 27 home game with TCU and the Big 12 Conference opener at Baylor on Oct. 4.

Kansas comes to Norman on Oct. 18.

Granger, a fourth-year junior from Dallas, has rotated with senior Cory Bennett behind sophomores Gerald McCoy and Adrian Taylor.

It is expected that Bennett, McCoy and Taylor will pick up an increased work load while fourth-year junior Cordero Moore fills in for Granger.

Coaches said Granger played well at Washington last Saturday before the injury occurred late in the second quarter.

Granger was blocked to the ground and fell with his body weight onto the foot, then had two offensive linemen fall on top of him.

Stoops reported Wednesday that Granger's injury was related to a "tendon and the bone."

His absence from the lineup likely will not be too damaging.

In passing situations and against spread-offense teams, Sooner coaches frequently have used a three-man defensive line that features two ends and either McCoy or Bennett on the inside.

Hoover writes, "His absence from the lineup likely will not be too damaging." and that is supposed to make us feel better. Unfortunately it is not all that true. Granger was coming back into form and he will definitely be missed. I'm glad he is trying to rehab. If it doesn't work out, he can always then opt for the surgery and hopefully be back and ready for 2009. In fact, maybe this injury will bring him into two-a-days in a little better shape! I'm rooting for you DeMarcus!
