OU could make history Monday

NORMAN — If No. 2- ranked Oklahoma defeats No. 24 TCU at Memorial Stadium on Saturday, the Sooners might make history on Monday.

That is when the Associated Press poll is released. A victory over the Horned Frogs, coupled with No. 1-ranked USC’s loss at Oregon State on Thursday night, might send the Sooners into the No. 1 spot.

That would give the Oklahoma program 96 weeks atop the AP poll, breaking a tie with Notre Dame for the most weeks ranked No. 1. The Sooners have not enjoyed the top spot since the final week of the 2003 regular season, before OU lost 35-7 to Kansas State in the Big 12 championship game. Oklahoma was No. 2 the entire 2004 season and since then has not been ranked higher than No. 3 (three times last season) The Sooners could be surpassed, however, by No. 3 Georgia. The Bulldogs, ranked No. 1 in the preseason but No. 3 after a close victory over South Carolina, gained big ground in the AP poll last week, from 48 points behind the Sooners on Sept. 15 (1,485 to 1,437) to nine points behind OU last week (1,484 to 1,475). Georgia won big at Arizona State, while the Sooners had last week oU. The Bulldogs play No. 8 Alabama this week.

We live in Oregon now and watched the momentous Oregon State upset of USC Thursday night, cheering that it would give OU a shot at the top spot. But History too? Thanks, John, for letting us know the stakes are even higher! Bob, team, you go guys! Another 50+ and daunting defense will get OU the recognition it already deserves.
GO SOONERS!
PS - Never thought we'd root for an OSU; however, we are thrilled for the Beavers, too. We have been pulling for them ever since U of O and the lousy PAC 10 refs cheated OU out of that victory in Eugene a couple of years ago. We were there too!

Great job to the Sooners and Pokes! O.U. should see the top stop and OSU will most likely wind up at 23 or something around it.
