Sooners use Bears to prep for Longhorns

WACO, Texas — With Baylor disposed of, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops looked ahead Saturday, saw it was Texas Week and proclaimed: "Here we go."

The Sooners head into the annual Red River brawl with an offense performing at near-peak efficiency. Sam Bradford threw for 372 yards in Waco, while a purposeful rushing attack cranked out another 217.

But what about the defense? With Colt McCoy and Texas' own fast-break attack up next, was there any concern that quarterback Robert Griffin rushed for 102 of Baylor's 194 yards Saturday?

"He got us a couple times," OU linebacker Keenan Clayton recognized. "But all the credit to him. He's the fastest guy we've faced."

More than anything, the Sooners were grateful the Bears provided a warm-up for McCoy, yet another run/pass threat who actually leads the Longhorns in rushing.

"He's been a terrific player since he's been there, and he's even better now," said OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables. "It's scary."

The Sooners prepare to contain McCoy feeling confident that they withstood the arm and legs of both Griffin and Washington's Jake Locker in the past three weeks. They'll feel extremely good about their ability to cover wide receivers while elusive quarterbacks buy time. That was the case at Baylor.

"They just keep playing well," said OU secondary coach Bobby Jack Wright of his defensive backs. "I don't know, maybe one day they'll get tested."

It should happen Saturday against McCoy and the Longhorns. Sounds like the Sooners will be ready.

"It's going to be great," safety Nic Harris said. "We all know how big that game is."
