Can Texas be the team that finally gets in Oklahoma's way?

Through their first five games, the Sooners had a decided advantage before they ever got off the bus. Tennessee-Chattanooga, Cincinnati, Washington, Texas Christian and Baylor never stood a chance, and now OU is the No. 1-ranked team in the land going into this week's Red River Rivalry against No. 5 Texas.

Nowhere has OU's dominance over its first five participants (hard to call them opponents when none put up any opposition) been clearer than in three first-quarter statistical categories.

OU compiled 49 first downs in the first quarter, while the other team had 11.

OU gained 963 yards total offense in the first quarter, while the other team gained 259.

OU scored 103 points in the first quarter, while the other team scored three.

"It's a total team deal," said offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson. "If you're starting fast, that means you're getting the ball back."

The Sooners have scored 42 percent of their points, picked up 37 percent of their first downs, and gained 36 percent of their yards in the first quarter.

"I don't know there is any special magic to it," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "Fortunately, we just come out and have played hard and played fast and have executed well overall."

The Sooners and Longhorns tangle at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Cotton Bowl. Texas has experienced similar success in outscoring its five opponents 236-57 (three by an identical score of 52-10). UT has outscored foes 52-9 in the first quarter.

Who's better? We find out for sure Saturday.

"Everyone understands," Stoops said. "I think the guys know going into the stadium, the atmosphere, the challenge of it all, the excitement. I think as much as anything, we're going against an excellent Texas team. This is another team ranked in the top five.

"You want another opportunity to win the South Division and compete for a Big 12 championship and pursue a national championship. This is a big step. There's more after this. We've handled business to this point, but there's more after this point."

I don't see either team having a big advantage in this game. Of course OU will be the favorite for good reason, but Texas is tough, talented, deep and won't give up. I see an old fashion, Knock-down, drag-out, street style Slug-Fest between two of the nations's best. OU has improved it's "D" more than Texas and that should be a big difference. I think our "O" hs more options than the Longhorns too. Bradford is a key, but having so many backs to go to and receivers to throw to will also determine the outcome. Colt is the key to their "O", but too much so. He is one of their leading rushers and I think our "D" can catch him and minimize his danger. GO OU!!!!

Kind of. We have 3 Freshmen, 2 of them are RS. Matt Moreland, RSF, Jimmy Stevens, RSF and Tress Way, Freshman. don't know much about them except Matt and Tress are out of Tulsa (BK & Union) and Jimmy is out of OKC (Heritage Hills?). Let's hope we don't need them. I don't mean to "slight" them, but we don't know what they are capable of yet. We haven't really needed them so far this season and they are Freshmen. I'm sure the coaching staff has taken this into consideration and let the rest of the team know what they have to do.

Colorado has the Altitude to help them. I thought the Buffs gave Texas a better game than anyone expected. I saw some holes. If they try to cover our receivers too much, Sam is sharp enough to audible and use our backs. I just don't think Texas "D" is up to our "O". They will stop us here and there, but we are just to balanced to be stopped totally. It will be quite a "chess" game between the coaches. So far this year, we have been able to jump out there quickly before the opponents can figure out how to defend us. Texas won't be as easy, but I think we will still hit 'em early and hard. I also think your score prediction will be pretty close.

I just re-read your second paragraph and agree totally. I don't think they can cover the corners and TE too. Especially if they want to stop the run. When our "O" is "clicking", the term "juggernaut" is very appropriate.

It seems to be tradition to start the game by running, but I think they will expect that and stack the box. Why not reverse the trend with some play action? Their "D" is fast, so use that speed against them and keep them wondering for the rest of the game. I don't want to say this will be our toughest game because we still have Kansas, OSU, TT and maybe Mizzou yet. At the very least, it will be an excellent Test. No time for "stumbles" from here on out, baby. Some phrases come to mind, but I can't put them in print here.

OU and Texas is going to be the best game the country has seen yet this year. I know it sounds like I'm being a homer , but lets face it; not one single game thats been hyped up this year nationally has lived up to its hype. Texas is a great team but I honestly think Stoops and company are on to something with the no-huddle offense. Colt McCoy is all they have and their defense is suspect. They have won 52-10 three times this year thus far by the same score and that is what I pick Oklahoma to stomp their ass by this weekend. BOOMER SOONER!!!!

I think that it is unfortunate that OU is not playing Missouri this year (unless it will be for the Big 12 Championship game). Bradford is one of the best quarterbacks in the country. I would like to see him win the Oscar (Heisman) this year. But Chase Daniel is getting a lot of publicity. If OU played Missouri this season, they would have a chance to knock him out of the box.
