OU needs help to return to top

Sam Bradford and Oklahoma were 6 1/2 point favorites entering the game against Texas. MIKE SIMONS/Tulsa World

As unusual as it seems to call Saturday's game between Oklahoma and Texas an upset, it was just that — the No. 5 Longhorns beating the No. 1 Sooners 45-35.

It was the first true upset in the series since 2000, when Bob Stoops guided OU to the national title with a run that began with a shocking 63-14 win over Texas.

Believe it or not, Texas was favored by two points in that game. Since then, the favored team won every year before Saturday, when the Sooners were favored by 6 1/2.

The point? Upsets in college football are all the rage in 2008. Three top-five teams — OU, Missouri and LSU — fell on Saturday. There will be more. That's good news for Sooner fans still feeling the sting of a loss to Texas.

"I don't know, in the end it's always disappointing to invest so much and you end up losing," OU coach Bob Stoops said Sunday.

But Stoops knows being 5-1 and ranked No. 4 going into the latter stages of October isn't so bad.

The Sooners need help, of course, to recapture the Big 12's South Division and regain enough stature in the polls to land their ultimate goal, a spot in the national championship game. The help can begin arriving this week when No. 7 Missouri (No. 3 last week) visits newly anointed No. 1 Texas — college football's fourth No. 1 team this season. The Longhorns also have upcoming games against No. 8 Oklahoma State, No. 7 Texas Tech and No. 16 Kansas.

"I think everyone realizes," Stoops said. "You just watch everyone else play, it isn't that easy to go undefeated at all. There's a ton of games left. There's half the season left, and a lot of good teams out there. We've got to be ready to play to be at our best. Chances are everyone else could have the same thing happen to them."

No one goes undefeated anymore.

BYU - Utah - Tulsa have the best shot at doing it through their regular season and conference championships. But, they'll still have a bowl game to get through...

I don't see it happening. So, there's still hope for our Sooners.

OU fans...we all need to take a step back and view what is really happening here. We have a defense that cannot adjust to a quality opponent who can match up in speed and strength. We get outcoached every time. Look at the bowl games!! If OU does somehow get back to the Big12 title game, and can win it, they will again be blown out in a BCS game unless the defensive coaches can actually put together a game plan for once.

Yes, the ritual moaning and groaning has set in among the folk who were beating their chests last week.

how is OU 4th in the division...and 4th in the country....following that logic shouldn't the 1. 2. 3. teams be Texas, Tech, OSU??

OU should be in the 9th

No, OU doesn't need any help, they just need to realize they have a good defense, its their offense, just keep scoring, forget about what the media talking heads will say when they start scoring 77 points a game. and since they will be kicking off alot more, keep trying onside kicks or punt for the kickoff to get better coverage. that will be all the help they need.

UT's next 3 are against Missou (12), Okla. State (10), & TX. Tech (5). OU will be at least 5 places ahead of UT at the end.
This from a UT fan and OU hater. We are gloating now but not 4 long probably.

Ok folks. I admit I blew my prediction on the OU Texas game. And I am of the firm opionion that all those who jump off the OU bandwagon after that thrilling loss, are not worthy to be Sooner fans. The ones who already are not Sooner fans; well, I never valued your negative comments to begin with, but for Sooner fans to be whining about a loss to a good team in a really good close game is just "whiny".

So, on to the topic I'd like to discuss with everyone. What about the National Championship hopes? Check out these scenarios (yeah, they are what ifs, but it would be interesting to post about):

A. OU runs the rest of the table, Missouri loses 1 more game but beats Texas when they meet and then beats them again in the Big 12 game? Could OU get to the NC with 1 loss, if Missouri and Texas have 2 losses, even if the Sooners are not the big 12 champions? (this is the most interesting scenario)

B. I guess it would take 2 losses by Texas for OU to get to the big 12 game, along with some help from PSU and Bama if they want to go all the way to the National Championship.

C. Is there a scenario where OU could jump Texas in the South without Texas losing twice? (I'm thinking no, but hey, it's worth looking at).

Interesting stuff. Can't wait to see how it all turns out. OU, steady your ship and win out. Worst case scenario, holiday or cotton bowl are not too shabby either.

Endora,
I couldn't be more certain that you have hit it right on the head.
Venebles is a extreme case of failed anger management.
OU has been weak since Mike Stoops left and I honestly don't think that Brent has the intelligence to run a defense.

The question is.... who would take his place?
