Replacing Reynolds not simple
By GUERIN EMIG World Sports Writer

Listen to a Q&A session with OU coach Bob Stoops from the Big 12 teleconference on Monday.

NORMAN — After Oklahoma's first practice without middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds on Monday, someone asked Brent Venables how long he could go before finding a replacement.
"Oh," the defensive coordinator said with a long breath, "I'll figure it out here in the next couple days."
You don't snap your finger and replace the guy teammates referred to as "the rock" of their defense. It is a task that involves multiple players and schemes.
Venables indicated redshirt freshman Austin Box, junior college transfer Mike Balogun and Brandon Crow, the sophomore who entered the Texas game last Saturday after Reynolds lost his season to a knee injury, were in the middle linebacker mix.
He also said: "There are different packages based on what's on the field, too. Depends on what an offense is giving us, how to match it up."
"We're not going to be real detailed about it," head coach Bob Stoops said. "We'll have a middle linebacker."
There was even speculation that weakside linebacker starter Travis Lewis could move to the middle.
"I don't think so," said the redshirt freshman coming off a 19-tackle effort against Texas. "That would mess me up a little. I'm getting into a groove at Will (the weak side) right now, and to put me at Mike (the middle), that would confuse
me. I think I'm solid at Will."
So that leaves Box, Balogun and Crow. Do not count on it being Crow, who struggled against both the run and pass last Saturday in the Cotton Bowl, and was called on primarily because he has spent the regular season backing up Reynolds in the middle.
Box and Balogun spent time behind Lewis on the weak side. Box was in the running to start before knee surgery to repair torn cartilage Aug. 12. Many thought Balogun might take the position, but he struggled with it and Lewis won the job.
Balogun, 30 pounds heavier than Box, has a physical advantage some believe makes him a frontrunner. But size does not necessarily matter.
Venables mentioned Box was faster than Reynolds, then said: "To me, what's most important is his understanding of what he's doing so that he's sure of himself. So that he is in good position and is a good tackler and can play fast. That's the biggest thing for any of those guys. Who's going to be the most sure of himself?"
Box sounds pretty sure.
"I know that there's a good possibility my number is going to be called. I think I'm ready," he said. "I've continued to progress and work hard. I've been playing Will, but it's not a completely foreign language to me. I'll be able to pick it up pretty quick."
Actually, to do everything Reynolds did will take time.
"Ryan was the best person as far as getting the defense aligned and getting the calls and getting calls quick," defensive tackle Adrian Taylor said. "He was always on top of it. Middle linebacker is a big, tough mental job, and he handled that pretty well."
The Sooners pledge they will help their new middle man however they can.
"When I went to the sideline (after Reynolds' injury), I saw that it was real serious," strongside linebacker Keenan Clayton said. "At that point, I looked at Travis and was like, 'We've gotta come together and get this done. We've gotta be the backbone of the linebacking corps now.' "
Reynolds is assisting as a second linebackers' coach.
"He's back there coaching those guys up," Venables said, "telling them what to look for and what to read and what to check and how to call the front."
It is a meaningful gesture, but a harsh reminder of the chore that lies ahead.
"Kansas is not going to wait on us to see who we want there," Taylor said of OU's opponent this Saturday.
Said Venables: "That was the one position you really couldn't afford to lose."

I AGREE VENABLES NEEDS TO EITHER PLAY HIS PLAYERS OR LET ANOTHER COACH DO THE JOB. OU HAS THE LINEBACKERS NEEDED AND COULD OF AND SHOULD OF WON THE TEXAS GAME BUT I GUESS V. HAD MONEY ON OU LOSING!
HEY, STOOPS CHECK YOUR EMPLOYEE STATS! WHO IS VENABLES ROOTING FOR?
