OU gives up yards, but five turnovers by K-State are key to win.

MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Oklahoma defense will be called out this week. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables will be vilified.

The Sooners were cooked for 550 yards by Kansas State on Saturday, but still won 58-35.

K-State quarterback Josh Freeman posted 478 yards passing, a ridiculous 16.5 yards per completion.

But Oklahoma’s defense was the difference between winning and losing.

OU picked up five turnovers, and none were free.

“In the second quarter we really buckled down and came up with some big turnovers,” OU coach Bob Stoops said.

Freeman was intercepted three times, and all three were pressured.

Linebacker Travis Lewis got the first and the third; on the first, OU defensive end Auston English was hanging onto Freeman’s arm.

Another time, Dominique Franks intercepted a screen pass because Freeman had three rushers in his face and hurried his throw.

Two other times, OU tacklers stripped K-State runners of the ball. The Sooner offense converted the defense’s labors into 20 points.

“There was a lot,”Venables said, “that was really good today.”

TURNOVER TALE

OU comfortably beat Kansas State Saturday because the Sooners turned five turnovers into 20 points. A rundown:

First quarter

K-State QB Josh Freeman is hit by Auston English while throwing, giving Travis Lewis an easy catch he returns for 28 yards. OU scores to take a 7-0 lead.

Second quarter

Keenan Clayton forces a fumble by KSU receiver Brandon Banks, and the ball is recovered by Nic Harris, who returns it 9 yards. OU scores to take a 41-28 lead.

Dominique Franks blitzes from the right and Brian Jackson from the left. Freeman sees two defensive linemen in his face, but doesn’t see Franks before he tries to flip a screen pass. Franks returns it 10 yards. OU scores to make it 48-28.

Freeman is sacked by Frank Alexander, who fights through a block to knock the ball away from Freeman. DeMarcus Granger recovers. OU fails to score on a Hail Mary pass as the first half expires.

Fourth quarter

Lewis gets his second interception after Freeman is flushed out of the pocket again. Lewis returns it 27 yards. OU gives it back two plays later—the Sooners’ first lost fumble of the season.

Let's say that KSU's offense was responsible for their demise and not the OU defense. The once-proud crimson 'D' has successfully given up over 1400 yards the last three games. Surprised that Tejas didn't score 100 on us...

let me get this straight, you say the sooner defense has looked bad since the beginning of the second half against Texas. up to that point in the season they had given up 2, 26, 14, 10, and 17 points against admittedly inferior offenses to the ones we're facing now. however, even a lot of those points were given up on special teams and on late, meaningless TD's in blowouts. so, what would be the connection? right, the sooner defense lost its QB. what happens to the big, bad sooner offense if bradford goes down? texas had only scored 13 points against the sooner D and some of those were on pretty short fields. the heisman parade that is currently, colt mccoy, was not looking that good. the middle of the field opens up and presto, we have liftoff. give the guys a break, will ya? it takes time to make young talent into all-americans.

and you can't separate the turnovers from the defense. i admit that i was getting skeptical of the defense and i still believe they have problems, but you just can't do that. all of those turnovers were from hustle and being where they were supposed to be. the interceptions were all from pressure applied by the sooner defense. the first fumble was a good play by clayton on the strip. the other fumble was a hit on a quarterback while applying pressure. you're right, they looked really bad during that stretch of the second quarter, but you can't take away the good things they did to fit your agenda. and notice, most of the damage was done in the middle of the field by crossing up and confusing the new kid. box will learn.
