OU's Stoops discusses Nebraska game during teleconference today

Audio: Listen to a Q&A with OU’s Bob Stoops during the Big 12 football coaches’ teleconference Monday. (approx. 10 minutes)

NORMAN — Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops was 11 years old the day Nebraska beat the Sooners in the original “Game of the Century.” His quarterback, Sam Bradford, was 13 days old when Patrick Collins raced 65 yards to lead OU past the Huskers in “Game of the Century II.”

With Nebraska coming to Owen Field this week, it seems a good time to reacquaint everyone with one of college football’s great rivalries.

“Every year whether it’s in two-a-days or summer, we show certain clips of some of the old games or rivalries,” Stoops said during his Big 12 teleconference session Monday morning. “I’m sure to some degree we will this week.”

The last time the Sooners and Huskers played, in the 2006 Big 12 championship, OU’s current starting defensive line was redshirting. Two if its starting linebackers, Austin Box and Travis Lewis, were still in high school.

And even upperclassmen who battled the Huskers in Lincoln during the '05 regular season could use a Big Red refresher.

“I believe our older players have seen (Nebraska highlights) enough. But you have to keep reminding them,” Stoops said. “It is funny how young guys and kids are. History is the last couple of years to them sometimes. We do our best, anyway, to educate them.”

There is a lot to teach this week. There is even a “Game of the Century” reunion scheduled into this weekend, featuring several of the greats from '71.

“I think it’s really neat,” Stoops said. “There’s great respect between the two programs, and they’ve had a lot of great, great matchups.”
