OU 'D' in the dumps
The Sooner defense has struggled mightily, giving up more points than it is used to.

Listen to a Q&A with OU head coach Bob Stoops during the Big 12 football coaches’ teleconference Monday.
The Sooner defense has struggled mightily, giving up more points than it is used to.
NORMAN — "Disgusting football."
That is the term Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables tossed out last Saturday, where the Sooners surrendered 550 yards and 38 points to Kansas State.
It marked the most yardage OU had given up since Bob Stoops' fifth game as coach, Oct. 9, 1999, when Texas racked up 553.
Just as troubling, it marked the third straight Saturday an opponent had scored at least 30 on the Sooners. The last time that happened was a three-game stretch from Nov. 1-15, 1997, when Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M outscored OU 150-21.
Another staggering trend: Over their past three games, the Sooners have given up 645 yards on what they consider big plays, pass plays of more than 25 yards and runs of more than 15.
"It's out of character to a degree," Stoops allowed Monday. "We've given up some big plays the last couple games, some quarterbacks scrambling around making some big plays. So in that regard we need to be better keeping the quarterback contained and not able to run around for five or six seconds, and hold our coverage a little longer.
"There's a good stretch of the game, though, where the defense gave our offense the ball 11 possessions inside of 60 yards to score. I think four times within 40 yards of the goal-line, with five turnovers."
The takeaways, seven over OU's past two games, have been good for OU.
The one touchdown K-State scored in last week's second half was encouraging. So was the six-punts-in-seven-Kansas-possessions stretch of the second half two weeks ago.
Still, as Venables put it, "You can't be Jekyll and Hyde and be any good on defense."
"It's discouraging to see guys that have played well through four games, and at times outstanding, have lapses," he went on.
It is discouraging when your middle linebacker is lost for the season early in the third quarter against Texas. Ryan Reynolds went down, and the Sooners haven't been the same since.
It is no good when you are defending a Murderer's Row of Big 12 quarterbacks.
"A lot of it has to do with the people that you're playing, the quarterbacks' ability to improvise and hold on to the ball," said Venables, who has seen Josh Freeman, Todd Reesing and Colt McCoy the past three weeks.
It is also, as the Sooners see it, no excuse.
"We're embarrassed for ourselves," linebacker Travis Lewis said.
500 AND COUNTING
Kansas State’s 550 yards of total oJense on Saturday was the most allowed by an Oklahoma team since 1999, when three opponents surpassed 500 yards. OU has given up more than 500 yards nine times under coach Bob Stoops, but Saturday’s 58-35 triumph was the first of those the Sooners won. Other games in which Stoops-coached OU teams allowed 500 yards:
566:
at Notre Dame, 1999 (L, 34-30)
553:
Texas, 1999 (L, 38-28)
550:
at Kansas State, 2008 (W, 58-35)
537:
at Colorado, 1999 (L, 38-24)
525:
West Virginia, 2007-08 Fiesta Bowl (L, 48-28)
525:
USC, 2004-05 Orange Bowl (L, 55-19)
519:
Kansas State, 2003 Big 12 championship (L, 35-7)
506:
at Oklahoma State, 2002 (L, 38-28)
501:
at Oregon, 2006 (L, 34-33)

Count me in as one who feel that the coaches are at fault here; the worst stretch of D that I have ever seen OU play. We likely lose to osu and taco tech, and end up in the Holiday Bowl (which we could also easliy lose with that defense).

Why cannot Mike Stoops lose more gains at Arizona, get fired, and return to OU?
Mike Stoops can shut down USC at Arizona, but Venables can't stop K-State with all of OU's talent?

The Stoops (both of them) defensive philosophy/scheme is flawed, as proven by OU's propensity to give up big plays. This has been the case every year. Yes, they do have some games where everything comes together for a whole game, ie Missouri in last year's Big 12 title game. But they almost always give up big plays and then blame it on missed assignments. Two problems; first, everyone knows what OU's reads are and the good teams with smart offensive coordinators and talented players know how to manipulate those reads. Matt Lienert said so when he humiliated the Sooners in the Orange Bowl for the National championship. Second, OU has the softest zone pass coverage IN THE WORLD. The Sooners let receivers go wide open and instead of breaking on the route and covering the player, they wait for the ball to be thrown. It requires a QB to make a bad read or a receiver to make a mistake for OU to stop a 6 to 12 yard pass play.

Maybe the defensive scheme of Mike Leach has caught on at OU, just score more points than your opponents.

Bob Stoops needs to step up and make some hard decisions instead of waiting to see what Wilson and Venables will do!

Despite what Sittler says, Venables is a nice guy but an average coach. Look at how many of the 500 plus games have happened while he was coach or associate. I am not an obscenity spewing fan as Sittler would say but someone who truly believes that this fellow has had an adequate chance and can't cut it. OSU changed defensive coordinators and look how far they have come this year. It is time we did the same!

It would be interesting to see several stats, like time of possession (each team), yd per play (each team), and total number of plays (each team). With OU's hurry up offense, is it possible that the other team's offense is on the field for more plays. Is the defense giving up more yards per play as the last several years? Are they allowing fewer yards per play?
While there have been gaffs and big plays against the defense, could OU's offense be part of the equation?
