NORMAN — His career now just weeks from completion, Oklahoma wide receiver Quentin Chaney has secured a legacy — he is one of Bob Stoops' all-time utility players.

"That's part of the game. Anytime you get the opportunity, you're supposed to make the most out of it," the senior from Booker T. Washington said. "When one person goes down, the next person in line has to step up and be ready to make plays. That's what I was able to do."

It first happened two years ago at Missouri. With star wideout Malcolm Kelly grieving over the loss of his grandfather, Chaney caught a 15-yarder for his first career touchdown.

The last two Fiesta Bowls, Chaney replaced the injured Kelly and responded with eight catches, 166 yards and two scores.

The last two Saturdays, with Manuel Johnson sidelined with a dislocated elbow, Chaney stepped up with eight receptions for 160 yards.

It seems he has earned the right to take some stock in the past four years.

You remember your first impression of this place?

I'll never forget the first day. I had just come in and unpacked. I went over to the indoor facility and saw Fred Strong and Lendy Holmes standing in the back watching the older guys run routes. I walked over to them and just started talking. Ever since then we were tight. We're basically brothers now.

What coach are you going to miss most?

I would say Coach (Jackie) Shipp, since he recruited me. Come to find out he knew some of my family. I miss Coach (Kevin) Sumlin. I'll miss my teammates the most, though, especially the guys I came in with in '04. There's not as many that came in that are still here... I know a couple other guys that thought about leaving earlier. But we stuck together.

Did you consider giving it up?

Yeah. I did. But my teammates, we kind of sat down and talked about things, got things off our chest to help each other respect and understand what's going to happen here as the years go on. Everything's not going to happen right then and there. It's going to take time. The guys really helped me.

You keep in touch with your old teammates from BTW?

Every once in a while I'll talk to Robert (Meachem) or Felix (Jones). I see Mark Anderson around every once in a while when he's home. A lot of those guys are real close. We're always going to be friends.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Well, everyone's going to say playing in the NFL, or retiring from the NFL. But I'm going to say doing something with children or something in the community. Being relaxed, not stressed out, having a family and just enjoying life.

Sorry but Quentin Chaney's choice of going to OU likely cost him an NFL career. For whatever reason he did not develop into the top-notch receiver everyone expected of him.

But he seems like a good, well balanced kid and I'm sure he'll do well at whatever he does.
