Stoops responds to move

NORMAN — The story swirling around the Kansas State football program reached Oklahoma on Wednesday night, when former K-State assistant Bob Stoops shared his thoughts.

"I always feel for coaches. I wish Ron (Prince) the best. He's a good guy," said Stoops, a Wildcats' assistant from 1989-95. "But I understand sometimes for whatever reasons situations are different for others, and they do what they feel they have to do. It's just unfortunate."

OU defensive coordinator Brent Venables, a former K-State player and assistant, had already been a message-board candidate to replace Prince. Asked if he expected the Wildcats to call about any of his staff, Stoops said: "If they do, they do. I have always encouraged my guys ... put my guys in front of anybody, not just there. You're starting a story when there isn't one now. I'm not going there.

"My guys are open to everybody in the country. That's pretty obvious. I've had quite a few go on. I've got no problem with it if they do."

Another bit of scuttlebutt had Bill Snyder returning to K-State's head coaching position after a three-year retirement.

"That wouldn't be for me to answer," Stoops replied when asked about that possibility. "I've got no idea."

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that KSU does call for Venables and he goes running. That would be the best thing for OU because Stoops won't fire him and they need a completely different defensive scheme. OU has the talent on D to be a top 10 defense. Stoops can then go to the SEC and get a true defensive coach like Texas did. Just stay away from Wilson and Patton, we need them to stick around.

Not sure which is worse, for Snyder to come out of retirement or Venables to get the job. IMO K-State admin overreacted. If they think they should win 10 games a season they are living in on Fantasy Island. If they can schedule 5 gimmes they still couldn't do it in this day and age of parity, plus the Big 12 is just more well balanced than when Snyder was HC.

Good luck, Wildcats.
