OU Notebook

Davis hurt: Alan Davis, one of three healthy defensive ends in Oklahoma's rotation, suffered what coach Bob Stoops termed a sprained knee Saturday, similar to the one that will keep end Auston English out through the Nov. 22 Texas Tech game.

That would leave Jeremy Beal, Frank Alexander and seldom-used Pryce Macon at defensive end against Tech, unless the Sooners consider pulling the redshirt off freshman R.J. Washington.

"I don't know, you hate to do that," defensive coordinator Brent Venables said. "We'll evaluate everything."

Beal and Alexander both received game balls for their effort at Texas A&M. Beal recorded two of OU's four sacks, while Alexander batted down a pass and, like Beal, provided constant pressure.

The duo was a big reason why Aggie quarterback Jerrod Johnson was benched after going 11-of-31 for 162 yards and two interceptions. It marked his first two picks after tying the Big 12 Conference record with 213 consecutive passes without one.

Getting better all the time: Alexander wasn't the only freshman OU staffers praised in postgame.

"Austin Box played really well," Stoops said of the middle linebacker who made eight tackles, second to Travis Lewis' 12, and laid out to pull in his first career interception.

Asked if it was Box's best game to date, Venables said: "I think that's a fair assessment."

Picky, picky: The Sooners scored 62 points on Nebraska Nov. 1, and still offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson
thought they missed four other touchdowns. OU put up 66 in College Station, and Stoops and quarterback Sam Bradford both thought points were left off the scoreboard.

On OU's second drive from the A&M 20, Bradford missed tight end Jermaine Gresham behind the defense for a would-be score, and threw an incomplete short pass instead. In the second quarter, Gresham dropped what should have been a 25-yard touchdown catch, and the Sooners wound up missing a 42-yard field goal try.

A drive later, Ryan Broyles broke free in the secondary during Bradford's rollout, but the OU quarterback didn't see him and scrambled for no gain. Finally, Phil Loadholt's holding penalty canceled a 16-yard TD run by Chris Brown.

No Eldridge: Brody Eldridge did not suit up to rest his injured ankle, leaving Gresham and Trent Ratterree as the Sooners' two tight ends. Ratterree never saw a pass, but he did help spring Bradford's game-opening 15-yard touchdown run by chipping defensive end Michael Bennett to get Bradford out wide and into open field.

Hawkeye pride: No Sooner was happier than Stoops that Iowa upset No. 3 Penn State with a last-second field goal.

"I'm excited for the Hawkeyes, my alma mater," Stoops said. "Kirk Ferentz is a good friend of mine. That's a good win for them.

"Matt McMillen (OU's administrative coordinator) walked out (on the field) and told me when they kicked the field goal. We were pretty well ahead. He didn't figure it would distract me a whole lot."
