Venables' wife has third child

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables was a little more laid back Saturday.

Sure, his defense played better in OU's 66-28 victory over Texas A&M. But that's not why.

Venables' wife, Julie, gave birth on Friday to the couple's third child. They have two sons, but this was their first daughter. Venables, 37, said she arrived three weeks early but still weighed 7 pounds, 12 ounces.

"Incredible. It was awesome. I mean, absolutely awesome," Venables beamed. "As I get older, you know, I mean, before (when his sons were born), I was like, (looking at his watch), 'Hey, I gotta get to work; I gotta staff (meeting); I gotta get some sleep.' This was just awesome."

Venables said his wife went into labor and went to Norman Regional Hospital before noon. He said he attended meetings, but left the team walk-through about 2:30 p.m. The baby was born around 4, and Venables stayed at the hospital until 6:30. He then got on a private jet head coach Bob Stoops had arranged for him to visit a recruit in San Antonio, and landed in College Station around midnight. He said the family is still picking out a first name, but he's given her the middle name of Katherine, after Venables' late mother.

"It was really good. Really cool," he said. "It softened me up a little bit."
