Candidate Brent: Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables is among the candidates to take over at Clemson. He and former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin have interviewed, while speculation is that Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips will also talk to Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp and Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson, among others, if he hasn't already.

Thursday, OU defensive tackle Gerald McCoy was asked about Venables' upward mobility.

"I can't necessarily speak on whether he's ready to be a head coach. But I can speak on what he brings to this team," McCoy said. "He brings fire and energy to the team. He keeps us pumped. He keeps us wired up all the time. He's a perfectionist, and if it's not perfect he's not going to let it slide."

On the stump: Should the Sooners, Texas and Texas Tech finish in a three-way tie atop the Big 12 South, the fate of all three teams will be in the hands of poll voters and computer data.

That's because the division winner and Big 12 championship game representative would then be the highest-ranked team in the BCS.

That, in turn, seems to bring politics into play and forces the three head coaches into using press conferences to stump for their teams.

"It's not very comfortable, I don't think, for any of us," OU coach Bob Stoops said. "We're not in the business of politicking. But I think it's fair to say for anyone reporting on it, there's an argument for and against anybody, if we're able to win.

"Any one-loss team, there's an argument for them and there's an argument against them, and I don't care who it is. It's just what you choose to present."

Ah, memories: The no-huddle offense has OU on the brink of rewriting its offensive record book and its quarterback about to make a trip to New York for the Heisman Trophy ceremony. And so it was interesting to hear Sam Bradford respond to a question about whether he misses anything about huddling.

"Getting to talk to everyone before the play, maybe a big play," Bradford responded, "where I would maybe say a couple things to the wide receivers about their routes, or talk to the line a little bit. You miss that.

"But I've really enjoyed playing in the no-huddle this year."
