Sooners drop in the coaches poll

Having the week off may be good for the soul, but it didn’t help in the poll.

Oklahoma didn’t play on Saturday and used the open date to rest and heal for a challenging finish, but the Sooners took a step back in the Bowl Championship Series standings on Sunday. OU stayed at No. 5 but lost ground in the USA Today coaches poll, the Harris Interactive poll and the computer rankings.

The Sooners took the hardest hit in the coaches poll, falling from No. 4 to No. 5 and getting jumped by Texas, which defeated Kansas 35-7. OU’s computer ranking slipped from fifth to sixth. The Sooners stayed fifth in the Harris poll but still lost votes.

Oklahoma’s BCS average slipped from .8444 to .8388, still behind Alabama, Texas Tech, Texas and Florida.

OU can climb back into the national championship chase by beating No. 2 Tech in a 7 p.m.

game at Owen Field and No. 11 Oklahoma State on Nov. 29 in Stillwater. Winning those would lift Oklahoma (9-1, 5-1) in the polls and might secure the Big 12 South Division title and a spot in the conference championship.

Blame people such as these folks that write these articles why OU has fallen, and why Florida - who lost to Mississippi at home - stays ahead of us.

I'm Sooner born and Sooner bred and when I die, you know the rest, but ... If my beloved alma mater doesn't play a completely different, wholly inspired game against Tech this weekend, Graham Harrell and his friends will win. OU's defensive habits, as seen thus far, will allow Harrell to pass his way downfield and score almost at will. Note I didn't say OU's defensive players -- they're as good individually as any I've seen there, and that's going back to the mid-70s. But they seem to be thinking too hard about where they have to be and who should be doing what, instead of attacking the ball and the ballcarrier -- which, when given the chance, they do excellently. OU's offense, behind Slingin' Sam, should do very well, because Tech's defense isn't as good as OU's, skill-wise. This game is in the hands of OU's defense, and they need to play as they have not played before.
