Bedlam ticket issue heats up
By BILL HAISTEN World Sports Writer

Listen to an interview with Mike Holder.
OSU’s policy spurs season-ticket sales but ticks off many fans.
STILLWATER — Even Mike Holder himself refers to Oklahoma State’s football ticket policy as “controversial,” and it’s a controversy that has lingered for 10 months.
In January, OSU’s athletic director announced that there would be no single-game ticket sales for Saturday’s Bedlam meeting with Oklahoma in Stillwater. Bedlam admittance would be exclusive to fans who purchased season tickets or secured tickets through the University of Oklahoma athletic department.
OU was given an allotment of 5,000 tickets, priced at $100 apiece.
Fans of both the Cowboys and Sooners have expressed contempt for the policy. Holder admits that he has been a magnet for criticism.
“We knew that if our team was successful, and if Oklahoma had their normal good season, and if the (Bedlam) game had some national significance, there would be even more rhetoric about the whole situation,” Holder said. “It’s a conversation (topic) every day.
“If we don’t bring it up, someone brings it up for us.”
Bedlam is a nationally anticipated clash of the Sooners and Cowboys, and there quite likely will be about 10,000 empty seats at 60,000-seat Boone Pickens Stadium.
Season tickets remain available
and will be sold until game time. One customer, Holder said, recently spent $3,276 for four 50-yard line tickets.
One game, four tickets, $3,276.
The breakdown: a $400 donation was required for each seat, and each ticket was $419.
Available through the OSU athletic department, remaining tickets are $294 (for a seat in the west end zone) and $419 (on both the north and south sides of the stadium).
Also available is a four ticket package, with seats in the west end zone, for $980 ($245 for each ticket).
Holder has been inundated with requests to change the policy — to release tickets on a single-game basis. He said months ago that he would not do it, and he says the same thing now.
“We decided that was a bad idea,” Holder said. “A lot of people have revisited that issue for us, and brought it to our attention repeatedly.
When the decision was made to adopt the policy, we looked at all of those options and decided that we wouldn’t o6er any alternatives. ... That was fundamental to the whole decision— there couldn’t be any options. There would be one way to attend the (Bedlam) game. You had to be a season ticket holder.
“We want to grow our season- ticket base. It’s not about Bedlam in 2008. Yes, that’s the game that we used because it’s the marquee game on our schedule, but we must grow our season-ticket base if we want to be to be successful over the long haul in the Big 12 Conference.”
Holder’s objectives were to cultivate increases in season ticket sales, attendance and home-game revenue.
As of last week, OSU’s school-record season-ticket sales total stood at 39,653.
Last year, the total was 33,400.
The old record of 38,674 was set in 2004.
Through six home dates, OSU’s attendance average is 48,133. The school record is 46,805, also set in 2004. For three games this season, the Cowboys attracted a crowd of • • more than 50,000. A school record crowd of 52,463 watched OSU triumph 55-24 over Troy.
Three years ago, when Holder became athletic director, the average revenue for a home game was about $1.5 million. This season, it ranges between $2 million and $2.5 million. Money from football ticket sales is a major source of funds for the athletic department’s operating budget.
“To be honest, we knew we would get some negative feedback,” said OSU marketing director Kyle Wray, referring to the Bedlam ticket policy. “We talked about this • a long time before we went public with it. We knew there would be some challenges.
It’s an educational process.
Our fans have to learn that buying a season ticket is the best option — both for them and for our football program.
We were confident that we would see positive results.
“When something might be unpopular, someone has to step forward and take the calls and the e-mails. Mike Holder agreed to be that person, and I was in complete support of him.”
OU athletic director Joe Castiglione declined when given an opportunity to comment on the Oklahoma State policy.
It seems certain that OSU will have the same policy next year — with one game being designated a premium game, and fans being admitted only if they are season-ticket holders. OSU’s 2009 home schedule includes dates with Georgia, Missouri, Texas and Texas Tech.
“In my mind, when we did it for the ’08 football season, we committed to doing multiple seasons,” Holder said.
For OSU’s home games with Houston,Missouri State and Troy, a single-game ticket was priced at $60. For Big 12 home games with Texas A&M, Baylor and Iowa State, the single-game ticket was $85.
When Iowa State played at Oklahoma State in 2004, the single-game ticket was $40.
“We’ve had significant increases in ticket prices and donor seating. Everyone that complains about that, I tell them that I feel their pain,” Holder said. “Raising ticket prices is not a very popular thing for an AD to do. If there were an election, you wouldn’t do that.
“But it’s necessary. It’s unrealistic to expect us to achieve at the highest level with our sports programs, in this very competitive conference, if your budget ranks 10th. There’s a reason that the University of Texas wins more conference championships than everyone else.”
OSU’s 2008-09 athletic budget is, Holder said, “around $45 million. Texas’ is $127 million.”
BEDLAM TICKETS: WHAT THEY COST, HOW TO GET THEM
Admittance to Saturday’s Bedlam football game in Stillwater is limited to those who hold Oklahoma State season tickets or purchased one of the 5,000 single- game tickets allotted to the University of Oklahoma.
OSU will continue to sell season tickets next week: $294 for a seat in the west end zone.
$980 for a four-ticket package ($245 apiece). Seating is in the west end zone.
$419, with seats available on the south and north sides of Boone Pickens Stadium.
On Web sites such as
stubhub.com
, Bedlam ticket prices range from $135 to $1,200.
Tom Johnson, OSU’s ticket manager, says purchasing “from a secondary market” can be risky.
“There is no guarantee that it’s a legitimate ticket,” he said.
“People pay a lot of money and find themselves with (counterfeit tickets). It happens every year, and we’ve seen it happen with past Bedlam games.”
Johnson predicts that the Bedlam showdown will attract a crowd of “about 50,000.”

I've been mad about this and griping about it on here since they implemented it, between running off Sean and this deal, I say fire holder. Oh wait a minute, boon won't let them. Let boone fund the athletic department, he makes all of the decisions anyway. Let us poor alumni attend a game. Oh wait a minute, OSU games are now like ou games, only the rich can go.

Even though I do not like the poilicy, the results speak for themselves. As a so called fan Carpe, you'll attend the BIG game but not the others? Pffftttt, your butt is needed in that seat EVERY game. If you are only a partime supporter why should they worry about you Mr Fairweather fan? The result worked, Season ticket Sales and overall revenue are up. Fans had plenty of warning and plenty of time to save up the money. The policy has a two fold effect, LIMIT the number of Sooner fans in our stadium, or they can contribute to our program.

the sad thing poke fans is u could fill every seat with orange pistolpete wannabees, exclude the sooner band, and make the sooners walk ten miles from the locker room b4 the game and get the usual result of an ou win. games are won by the players and not stupid gimmicks. is this your best attempt at relevance? its sad.

Just boycott overpriced tickets. It is entertainment. I agree with Carpe, only the rich can go. Take your family to dinner and a movie instead. At least with a movie you will be entertained for two hours.

Robness did you even read the story? It has nothing to do beating OU. It has to do with growing the season ticket base. Which, again if you read the article, you would see that season ticket sales are up almost 6,000 over last year. I would call that a success.

Let me buy bedlam tickets and I'll make a deposit or pony up for the 2009 season now. He could probably sell 5K of these empty seats and garuntee the same amount of season ticket sales for future years. Instead they've frustrated me to such an extent that I'm out in 2009 wheras I was willing to give a committment 9 months in advance.

Here's the facts, we did not ONCE sell out the stadium the entire season (this makes the forth year in a row) even while being ranked in the top 10. The largest crowd was a non conference game. Holder has priced OSU out of the market, we are at the top for ticket prices. If next year he tried this stunt he will sell less season tickets as while some might buy the season package just for the UO ticket not many will buy the season package for the likes of Texas.
Holder has cottled himself to the elite, and is poor investment decisions have lost MILLIONS for the university. Why does the university keep him around, oh I forgot Booner run the university and he tell the pres what to do
I am glad we are successful, that means alot less $ out of my pocket as I will stay home in the comforts of my HDTV and what and yell for my Cowboys

To Tom Johnson
There is nothing risky about "other markets" if you use your credit card. IF the ticket is a fake your card company will refund the money
Nice try Tom

One last message to Holder, please quit compairing our revenues to the likes of Texas, OU and Nebraska. Their stadium hold in most cases 50% more than Boones farm, so if you want the same revunues Mikie build and additional 20-30,000 seat in our stadium
In the mean time don't insult us by comparing our revunues to the largest stadiums in the Big XII

Holder's doing great, but it's funny to watch the papers try to stir up the controversy. For those who say Holder's priced the tickets too high, several weeks ago I checked and the most expensive tickets are sold out, the medium price tickets are only available in the upper sections, but there are plenty of cheap seats to OSU football. If you want to come to the Bedlam game, season tickets are available, but they're mostly the cheap seats.

Well, ticket issue aside, Holder is OBVIOUSLY incompetent because he said "There’s a reason that the University of Texas wins more conference championships than everyone else.”
Actually, Texas has 4, and OU has 6. You would think he would know something about the conference he is in.

Its nice to hear all the gripes from sooner fans and those pretending to be cowboy fans. I will admit that it is very expensive for a one income family with children to attend football games. It took me about 8 years after I graduated before I could affod season tickets. Bought 2 and farmed the kids out to my inlaws on game days. Being poor does have it's problems.

just sell single game tickets, many people cannot afford season tickets, but single game tickets may be easier on some people's wallets.

Robness, you are typical and small minded. OSU is the number 11 team in the country. How is that for relevance?
Snoop, quit saying "us." You are a baffoon and associating yourself with OSU makes my stomach turn.
Soonerguy, you are the perfect depiction of a sooner stereotype where the only college sport you recognize is football. How about comparing the conference championships of EVERY sport next time.
tulsaOUfan, just further proof that you are also a baffoon: Holder is going to implement this same plan next year when OSU doesn't even play OU at home...so how does that make OSU all about OU?

An idiotic business move. Holder needs to go. I am an OU fan, I have been to two OSU games this year in support of OSU. But! that was before I found out how Holder is treating the OSU fans...First, his business concept will work only as long as OSU is winning. I for one hope not but if they fall to a 6-6 or 5-6 team, he will lose any gain he has made in season tickets sales. Under his plan, if you have a .500 team, you could go into a Bedlam game with very few fans...OSU fans and businesses need to wake up and get rid of him. He has proven that he cares little for the fan by this business decision...He further proves it by trying to negotiate a Red River type game in Dallas against one of the other Texas teams. If he gets his way, you will lose a home game every other year anyway...thats taking business away from Stillwater businesses and making it hard for the OSU fan to attend the game. If you can't fill the stadium in Stillwater, what makes you think you can fill one in Dallas...either way, it shifts business and tax dollars away from Stillwater to Dallas....Being a state school I think Oklahoma citizens, legislatures and fans should make that decision and not him...Anyway, a stupid business move...he could at least give or sale the tickets to OSU students or OSU alumuni.

You grow your season ticket base by putting a product on the field that people can't resist seeing. or you can hold(er) your fans hostage. As a major university OSU's appeal had always been that it wasn't OU, that it wasn't elitist, that it was more affordable, more down to earth.
"To be honest, we knew we would get some negative feedback,” said OSU marketing director Kyle Wray.
Our fans have to learn that buying a season ticket is the best option — both for them and for our football program.
