Big 12 coaches select Bradford as top offensive player

NORMAN — Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, who presumably will be competing against Colt McCoy for the Heisman Trophy in just over a week, picked up one major award over his Texas counterpart on Tuesday when the league's head coaches named him Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
Bradford, one of nine Sooners on the All-Big 12 first teams, became the third OU quarterback to receive the honor. The others were Josh Heupel in 2000 and Jason White in 2003 and '04.
Others from the Big 12 South champion Sooners who received special recognition Tuesday were center Jon Cooper, named the Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year; linebacker Travis Lewis, recognized as Defensive Freshman of the Year; and Bob Stoops, who picked up his fourth Coach of the Year award along with Mike Leach of Texas Tech. Leach also was named the Associated Press' Coach of the Year.
Dez Bryant, one of three Oklahoma State Cowboys on the All-Big 12 first teams, was named the Big 12 Special Teams Player of the Year after he led the league with an 18-yard punt return average.
Bryant also was a first-team wide receiver along with Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree and Missouri's Jeremy Maclin. They are the same three players up for the Biletnikoff Award presented to the nation's top wideout.
Oklahoma State tackle Russell Okung made the first-team offensive line, as did OU's Phil Loadholt, Duke Robinson and Trent Williams. Cooper, despite being named lineman of the year, was the second-team center behind Texas' Adam Ulatoski.
It
was an all-Bedlam first-team backfield, featuring OSU running back Kendall Hunter, the Big 12's leading rusher with 1,518 yards, plus OU tailback DeMarco Murray and Sooner fullback Matt Clapp.
The other Sooner recognized on the offensive first team was Jermaine Gresham, who beat out fellow Mackey Award finalists Brandon Pettigrew of OSU and Chase Coffman of Missouri at tight end. Coffman was selected to the second team.
First-team defense honorees from OU were tackle Gerald McCoy and safety Nic Harris. Lewis, the Sooners' leading tackler, made the second team as did teammates Jeremy Beal, Dominique Franks and Lendy Holmes on defense, and Juaquin Iglesias and Cooper on offense.
OSU's second-team members were linebacker Andre Sexton, cornerback Jacob Lacey and punter Matt Fodge.
Honorable mention picks included the Cowboys' Jeray Chatham, Perrish Cox, Orie Lemon, Ricky Price and Tonga Tea, as well as the Sooners' Chris Brown, Brandon Walker and Keenan Clayton.
