OU's best

A look at OU's highest scoring offenses of all-time, ranked by points per game.

No. 1: 2008

PPG: 53.3

Rushing: 202.4

Passing: 354.2

Total offense: 556.7 (2nd)

Record: 11-1

OU's best offense is the only Sooner offense (and one of two in the Bowl Subdivision this season) to average 300+ passing and 200+ rushing. Already owning the school record with 640 points, these Sooners need to score 17 more to set the NCAA single-season record. Sam Bradford could win the Heisman — and more.

No. 2: 1956

PPG: 46.6

Rushing: 391.0

Passing: 90.7

Total offense: 481.7 (4th)

Record: 10-0

Tommy McDonald, Clendon Thomas and that crew were as good as any football team before or since, and proved it by winning a national title and a record 47 straight. But as good as Bud Wilkinson's straight T offense was, the defense — with six shutouts in 10 games — might have been better.

No. 3: 1971

PPG: 44.5

Rushing: 469.6

Passing: 87.3

Total offense: 556.8 (1st)

Record: 11-1

Prep passing ace Jack Mildren became the Godfather of the Wishbone at OU. It helped to have halfbacks like Greg Pruitt and Joe Wylie, a fullback like Leon Crosswhite (35 career 100-yard games between them), and three blockers who made All-Big Eight. This group still holds the NCAA record for rushing yards per game.

No. 4: 1974

PPG: 43.0

Rushing: 438.8

Passing: 68.9

Total offense: 507.7 (3rd)

Record: 11-0

Joe Washington and his silver shoes sparkled in the Sooners' second great wishbone offense. Four blockers made all-conference (three made All-American), helping Washington, Steve Davis and Jim Littrell ground it out and allowing Barry Switzer's second OU team to win his first of back-to-back national championships.

No. 5: 2003

PPG: 42.9

Rushing: 145.9

Passing: 293.5

Total offense: 439.4 (11th)

Record: 12-2

With Jason White setting passing records (3,846 yards, 40 TDs, 10 INTs) that, next to Bradford, now look quaint, the Sooners were unstoppable until injuries to White (and LSU and K-State) interrupted a championship coronation. Mark Clayton set every single-season receiving record, and two linemen were voted All-Big 12.
