Tebow's Gator grit
He promised to play harder than anyone.
QB backs up his words, leads team to BCS title game

Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, shown after a score against Florida State, used a loss to Mississippi as motivation for the rest of the season. Steve Cannon/AP

Sam Bradford is a Heisman candidate and we have a Web site devoted to his season and career.

NORMAN — The pivot in Florida's season, and Tim Tebow's Heisman Trophy campaign, occurred at the low point for the Gators.

It was Sept. 27. Mississippi — Ole Miss! — had just pulled a 31-30 upset in The Swamp after Tebow had failed on a fourth-and-1 keeper with 55 seconds remaining. The reigning Heisman winner took some time to compose his thoughts in the locker room, reported to the postgame press conference podium, and began, "I just wanna say one thing..."

He took a deep breath.

"... to the fans and everybody in Gator Nation..." He looked down and squeezed his lips together.

"...I'm sorry. I'm extremely sorry. We were hoping for an undefeated season. That was my goal, something Florida's never done here. But I promise you one thing: A lot of good will come out of this. You have never seen any player in the entire country play as hard as I will play the rest of this season. And you'll never see someone push the rest of their team as hard as I will push everybody the rest of this season. And you will never see a team play harder than we will the rest of this season. God bless."

Tebow turned and bolted from the room. It's the last time anybody saw that player or that team since.

The following Saturday
at Arkansas, the Gators scored the first time they had the ball, on Tebow's touchdown pass to Brandon James after Tebow's conversion on fourth-and-1. Florida won 38-7.

The Gators spent the next seven games scoring at least 42 points, becoming the first SEC team to do so. They sent then-No. 4 LSU into a season-long tailspin with a 51-21 win. They did the same to then-No. 8 Georgia by beating the Bulldogs 49-10. They won at Florida State bigger than they ever had — 45-15.

"That was just a real good whipping," Bobby Bowden said.

Tebow had a lot to do with it, with 80 yards rushing and three touchdown passes in the Tallahassee rain.

Bowden recalled Tebow's post-Ole Miss speech and said, "By golly, he lived up to it. He directed everything out there."

He was just getting warmed up.

Saturday night, Tebow took the SEC championship field against No. 1 Alabama without run/catch dynamo Percy Harvin, and with team rushing leader Chris Rainey too injured to carry more than once for 1 yard. He fell behind in the fourth quarter, the first time the Gators had trailed since Ole Miss, prompting CBS to make a big deal about how he was 0-5 in games he had trailed in the second half.

And then he took his offense on back-to-back touchdown drives covering 63 and 66 yards, firing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Riley Cooper to cap a 31-20 comeback and clinch Florida's place in the Jan. 8 BCS national championship game against Oklahoma.

Instead of showing that 0-5 graphic, CBS cut to Tebow as he exhorted fans in the Georgia Dome, and then jumped into the special teams huddle to fire up kick coverers. The Heisman campaign that seemed dormant on Sept. 27 was alive and well.

"No disrespect at all because I think the Big 12 quarterbacks, all three of them, are tremendous players..." Florida coach Urban Meyer said. "I think (Tebow) is the best football player in America."

Tebow was thriving again. Not coincidentally, so was his team.

"There's a special something inside of him, and I'm not talking about throwing, I'm not talking about running," Meyer said. "I'm talking about the ability to make the level of play of everyone else around him better."

About that season-turning speech?

"I wasn't saying we were going to win every game or we were going to be awesome or anything like that," Tebow said after beating Alabama. "It was, 'we're going to play as hard as we can. We're going to be the hardest-working team possible.'

"That's something we can control. And I think we've shown that."

So can anyone tell me what he did so great that warrants so much man-love. If they gave out heismans for running and yelling on the sidelines and jumping on the backs of the kick-off team then a lot of mascots have gotten the shaft over the years.

In reply to James Eugene,It really is hard for some of us to be good sports. I`m a huge OU fan and think that Sam is the best QB in college football, But that doesn`t mean I`m going to trash Tim Tebow as far as I know he is a great leader and a better person .. He not only is a guy who gives of himself for others , he`s a good football player. So I guess i`m saying don`t trash Tim, but lets talk up or coach up Sam, who I feel is just as good of kid and also a great leader.. I hope that we are not going to be blasted with Mr Tebow stories for the whole month but that we feature both teams position by position. I`m sure the readers want to know more about both teams and Coaches.....

JamesEugene...you are too funny! Sharkey Hammerhead...you are right! Tebow is a great leader and a great quarterback. I have a lot of respect for Florida and what they have accomplished. However, I love my Sooners and they have accomplished quite a lot, too. I think we have a fantastic quarterback in Sam Bradford and we have a great team....this will be a good game and I know these two teams have a lot of respect for each other. It is a shame that we are underdogs for this game even though we are #1....but that is because about three fourths of this country still thinks we don't deserve this shot and will choke again....I beg to differ...this team is tired of hearing it...they made a statement in the Big 12 title game because they were tired of hearing it....they will go into that game prepared and focused...BOOMER SOONER!!!

Sam's numbers are greater than Tebow's running back career...oops...I mean qb jaunt at Florida.

If Bradford doesn't get the Heisman, I wouldn't expect to see him in Norman next year. Especially with the rumors of a rookie salary cap in the near future. Would anyone really give up a potential $50m career?

I wish the entire country and every sporst writer would get off of Tebow's chestnuts (festive). Is he good, yeah, but what other quarternack in history has been more prolific than Bradford and his ridiculous passing numbers this season. Let's call Tebow what he is, one of the best scrambling qb's (the NFL loves those) with a pretty good arm, an arm good enough that it would qualify him as the fifth or sixth best pocket passser in the Big XII (Bradford, McCoy, Harrel, Daniels, and maybe even Robinson).

I think part of the argument that a lot of people have for Tebow is that the defenses in the Big 12 were somewhat suspect this year. I'm not taking anything away from the others on "the list". Just throwing out there what I've been hearing.

Let's be honest though, Bradford is surrounded by crazy talent. His O-line is dang near inpenetrable. He has the stats because he has the support. He doesn't have to do everything for them to be successful on offense.

Tebow, on the other hand, has to carry his offense to a degree. The SEC Chanpionship was a perfect example. He accounted for most of their offensive production. Without Tebow Florida is a mid-level top 25 team.

I agree with I.M. & Vern after the Alabama game. Florida talks like they beat them by 40 points and Bama's offense stunk up the place. Run to Vegas on that 3 points.

Keep talking boys. Keep giving Flordia stuff to post in their locker room like Stoops did. They will have their two best players back. Talk about "kennel blind" or maybe just a bunch of 18 yr olds. Tebow is tougher than Sam.

A one horse team? replay of Tech game? are you kidding me? some of you OU homers kill me. UF just beat number one 12-0 Alabama on a netural field by 11 without Percy Harvin.

Theres always delusions of grandeur on both sides of the 50 yard line. It winds up being a game of who can overcome that hype and get down to the basics. Just look at Boise State and see how hype can ruin a team. They beat O.U. with one of the oldest plays in the book, the Statue of Liberty play. I think they used that play in Leatherheads. O.U. might as well practice up their crusty bobs, chase the cats tail, and pig in the poke.

TMS, has Tebow played injured bad enough to require surgery? A bloody nose he wore around like a badge is not the same as ruptured tendons.

True, I am not aware of ruptured tendons however he has played a game with a broken leg, and another with a broken hand. They are style wise very differant. Tebow lifts with the o-line in spring training and has a running advantage. Sam is a get the ball to the correct reciever quickly but is a last resort to run the ball.

Game should be very good

retsyned I live 90 miles from Gainesville so I've heard about Tebow since he was a jr in high school, and I don't ever recall hearing anything about him playing with a broken hand much less a broken leg, just where is your info coming from, maybe I was sleeping when it was reported but I'm sure I would have heard about it.

Info on Tebow's broken hand from last year.
is at ESPN's website. Do a Google search for - tebow broken hand. You'll see he broke his non-throwing hand last year against FSU and spent a couple of weeks in a cast prior to the bowl game with Michigan.

You can check on the broken leg story the same way. He played on a broken leg in HS. It's documented and a Google search shows numerous reports on it.

Look at any picture from last year's Heisman acceptance ceremony. Notice the cast on his right hand. He broke his hand in the 2nd Quarter of the FSU game on a running TD.
"At this point, we got to go. We're full speed ahead," Mullen said. "But you know he played high school with a broken leg in half of a game, so I don't worry about if he's going to go."

Reading the comments from you you OU homers has been entertaining to say the least. Hope your team shows up considering how you have flailed in big bowl games recently. Don't want you to taint the Big 12 like Ohio State tainted the Big 10 the past two years. I imagine after Florida thoroughly beats your team you will complain that the BCS Champ game was not held at a neutral site since it was in the state of Florida. You can just keep thinking that the Gators defense is not for real and that our offense is a one trick pony. Clearly you haven't been paying attention.

The Gators will not take OU lightly. You will lose this one. Our defense will show you what it means to play in the SEC.

PS Talking about Old Miss, you sound like Bama fans and you see how far that got them. Come to think of it, your team kind of looks like Bama. Same colors. And that last time you played a team wearing orange and blue, how'd that turn out?

OU is quickly becoming the new Ohio State. UF is not the same team that lost to Mississippi just like OU isn't the same that lost to UT in Dallas. If OU loses this game yes they will cry "we keep having to play these national championship games on the road." I love how an OU homer like Al Eschbach said Tebow shouldn't be even invited to the Heisman ceremony. WOW.

There he is again. The "Kinda Jealous Loser". Loopy Gator, your name says it all. Yeah, you put a real beatdown on Bama didn't you. Watch it again only this time put away the moonshine. Scritchner you must be kidding. That sounds like the McCoy worshippers. "Poor old average little untalented Texas would've hardly been able to beat anyone if not for their savior Colt". TMS that would be great if this were a cage fight but skill is what's needed. And in answer to your question Mr. Hogan: The same thing they've been doing all year. Score another touchdown. And another and another and another and another. You see where this is going? Boomer Sooner

Tebow is big and slow and throws an ugly pass. He thinks Jesus favors Florida football. Bradford is a lot better and doesn't have to make cheezy motivational speeches. Tebow better pray for a miracle because he's going to need it.

I was talking to an Auburn fan yesterday and he said OU has been playing agaqinst inferior defenses in the Big 12. He says we do not stand a chance against a SEC defense. I reminded him of 2000 and the fact that Stoops once was the defensive coordinator for Florida. He just countered with "mark my word" you will lose bad.
Now I know why Alabama fans hate Auburn so much.
Go Sooners another wipe out of a Florida team like OU did to Florida State in 2000.

I was talking to a guy from Auburn yesterday and he says OU doesn't have a chance because we have played against the inferior Big 12 defenses. I suggested this year will be another 2000 game and
OU will do to Florida what they did to Fla State.
