Correction
This column incorrectly listed the teams playing in the Rose Bowl. Penn State played the University of Southern California.

Correction:
The Rose Bowl matchup in this story was incorrect. USC will play Penn State.

As the state tries to get over one of the worst sports hangovers in recent history, with Oklahoma State stinking it up against Oregon, playing rotten defense and coaching even worse, as Gundy seemingly lost track of reality and had his poor battered quarterback running the idiotic option as the losing clock ran out; and as OU's overrated basketball team lost without point guard production; and as TU plays hard but can't buy a decent win, it's time for this question.

Bob Stoops: Good or great?

The national championship game a week from today could be the biggest in OU football history.

It is without a doubt the biggest game in the career of Bob Stoops.

A pick of that game will appear
next week.

Bowl picks so far? Scorching.

Here is a brief perspective on this monstrous BCS title game, and how it could be the defining moment in Stoops' career.

OU is an elite team, with an asterisk.

It is a regular big-game participant, but a routine loser at the top level, several times in somewhat embarrassing fashion — laughed at by USC, defeated by a ragtag mid-major in Boise State.

Here is the current state of the Stoops story: He obliterates bums at home, and soundly defeats the good teams that come to Norman, as well.

His recruiting eye and coaching tactics are so strong, he has to win but two or three tough games a year: Texas, for sure, Oklahoma State or Tech or Missouri sometimes, a decent North winner upon occasion. Nobody is better than Stoops at winning games that propel a team to the big time.

Winning the big one is another matter.

When talent is similar, his philosophy of stopping the run first proves troublesome in the modern game, as mobile quarterbacks drive the Sooners in circles.

Nobody gets to the big ones like OU, but others have played better in the finale.

The outcome of this BCS title game will push the Stoops big-game legacy in a specific direction.

PICKS

New Year's

Outback Bowl, Iowa (-4) versus South Carolina: Couple of coaches with bigger reputations than acts.

The Big Ten continues its battle against global humiliation.

Wrong one favored.

SC by 6.

Capital One Bowl, Georgia (-7 1/2) versus Michigan State: For those who were wondering where flop of the year Georgia went.

Classic disinterested big shot versus feisty nobody

The problem with Big Ten players is their feet don't go fast enough.

Georgia by 7.

Gator Bowl, Nebraska versus Clemson (-2 1/2): About 200,000 should make the trip from Nebraska, with 150,000 hanging around outside the stadium, listening.

It's almost a little sad, watching the Husker fans play Remember When.

Clemson by 4.

Rose Bowl, USC (-9) versus Ohio State: The Granddaddy has lost a step the chief problem with the BCS is only one game counts: This may be pretty, but it means beans.

Both should be ashamed, as losses to dog meat kept them from the national picture.

Neither quarterback could hit the Pacific from the shore.

USC by 13.

Orange Bowl, Cincinnati (-2 1/2) versus Virginia Tech: Should be cancelled.

Tech by 7.

Friday

Cotton Bowl, Texas Tech (-4 1/2) versus Mississippi: No longer at dawn on the 1st.

Leach again passed over by many bigger and better schools looking for a coach.

Must be the comedy routine.

Miss by 6.

Liberty Bowl, East Carolina (-3) versus Kentucky: Give me Liberty, or give me the channel changer.

Kentucky by 4.

Sugar Bowl, Alabama (-10) versus Utah: This year's freak-fest, this year's OU-Boise, one there to study, one to party out.

Alabama by 8.

Saturday Bowl

International Bowl, Connecticut (-5) versus Buffalo: To be played in Canada, which still isn't far enough away.

Saturday Pros

Atlanta (-2 1/2) at Arizona: All four road playoff teams are favored, a first, denotes balanced mediocrity.

The teams may not be any good, but the weather is.

Look at these two signal callers and then forget golf, make your son a quarterback.

Arizona by 3.

Indy (-1) at San Diego: SD is uniformly great.

Too bad those great uniforms are not worn by more skillful players.

Indy by 4.

Sunday Pros

Baltimore (-3) at Miami: Miami is like a college team and runs wacky stuff from the spread formation.

The Ravens are stuffy; worse still, all the experts love the Poe boys.

Miami by 4.

The Eagles (-3) at Minnesota: Why is everybody in love with Philadelphia? All it did was beat Dallas, whose quarterback throws passes about as well as his girlfriend throws acting lines.

Minnie by 3.

Monday Bowl

Fiesta Bowl, Texas (-8) versus Ohio State: How could Texas have been cheated out of the title game, and all the while be overrated?

Such is the folly of the BCS.

No split title possible unless Texas wins this 75-5.

Doubt it even wins.

Big Ten finally hits a lick.

Ohio State by 2.

Tuesday Bowl

GMAC Bowl, TU versus Ball State (-1 1/2): Good news for the players, the sponsor just got bailed out, as it was given bank-like status — before the news, the bowl gifts were bags of groceries.

Great national spotlight — this is the only game on earth.

Hopefully the TU offense won't be as n-n-n-nervous as last time.

Loss of man who invented the offense has to hurt big time.

Letterman State is similar to TU, nice quarterback, good offense, no defense.

TU by 6.

Happy New Year Mr.Picker!!! Oregon coach openly stated he would stop the run first. He did.Seemed to have worked with a mobil quarterback. I guess we could ask his doctor.
Bob will do the same thing. You and I will be talking about it. Stoops will be doing it.
By the way, I ordered Cal visors. I have an extra if you want one.Navy or Yellow background. You Pick.

Before making picks, you need to know which teams are playing the game. Check out the Rose Bowl. I believe Penn State would be surprised to see that Ohio State is playing usc.

This is why I double check my fly before leaving home. It's also why proofreaders and copy editors really wanted a safe room built in the World building.

A "ragtag mid-major" who was ranked higher than OU. Interesting how everybody forgets that.
I have to root for the Big 12 (and in this case, Texas included) after Missouri failed to come to play, and OSU blew it - we need to prove that we are one of the best conference, so the top 3 in the Big 12 need to win!

Give the guy a break. What difference does it make who USC is playing? They'd beat anybody they would play in the Rose Bowl today by 13, except maybe Oregon State.

Stoops name after this one will be OU Coach with 2 titles. This BCS will be pretty much like the 2000 bowl except OU will score another 60+ to set a new title for 5 straight games. Go Sooners.

I get the distinct feeling that the pro OSU Tulsa World sees an OU victory and is trying to get in its last minute shots at Stoops and OU while they can.

There are "big" regular season games and "big" bowl games. Not all bowl games "big" games. Unless the bowl game is the BCS Championship game, it's interesting but unimportant. Coach Stoops is 1-2 in bowl games that count. If he beats Florida, he'll be 2-2. Exactly the same as Coach Switzer's record in bowl games that determined a National Championship. Speaking of Ohio State, Coach Tressel is also 1-2 in "big" bowl games. So according to the Tulsa World, I guess he's "Medium Game Jim."

Its for fun reading to get everyone stirred up , thats good for the newspaper and The Picker...All that other stuff is ok , I mean picking the other bowls, My main concern is the Sooners and only the Sooners.. The game plan is to stop Tebow ,how Venables tries to do that only they Know.. If Balagon can play spy and everyone else just play solid Def, OU should win... Yes everyone who loves the Sooners should be rooting for Big 12 schools ,makes are conf. look that much Stronger, KU,Neb,Missouri, have already won and as a Sooner fan It`s going to be hard but I`m rooting for Texas to clobber Ohio State, Its all good for OU and the conf....My prediction is OU42-Gators28... Goooooooo Sooners

Right On Sharkey. This is about the only time of the season that I root for Texas. The Big XII needs to prove we are the best conference in teh country. OSU fell on their faces, but the rest should do OK. I don't expect OU to hang a half hundred + 10 on Florida, but it wouldn't surprise me either. It seems all the big (so-called) sports writers expect Fl to to win, which is good. Just more fire for our Sooners Bellies. I like the Player's attitudes for this game. Can't wait for Thur.

I've heard several OU fans call for Venables to leave. Why? It seems to me like he's an excellent defensive coach.

What if he can hold Florida's offense to less than 35 points? Should he still be fired?

The PIcker's record for the big bowl games over a three year period: 2005 USC over UT, 2006 OU over Boise, 2007 OU over W. Virg. 0 in 3 in big bowl picks. Maybe a name change is in order from The Picker to The Talker.

Hey Punks and (and the occasional scholar): I missed the USC over P State game by one. Typical
The odds on Stoops going to Denver?
99.666 to 1.33334
Breed: What's a Cal? But I would love the visor in yeller.

Jo the Puluka: We don't mind those who study our every move and mood. But get you stats right. You can miss the team but be on the right side of the point spread. This year, for example, I was the only one on the face of the planet earth to take Texas and the points over OU, thank you very little.

Fire The Politicians, (1/2/2009 11:58:02 PM)
Picker Dude:

The philosophy of stopping the run first is something that might have helped OSU and Texas Tech as they could not tackle a slow footed QB from Oregon and mediocre running backs from Ole Miss respectively.Don't look now but the Big 12 North went 3-0 in bowl games and the vaunted Big 12 South is 0-2.

Tebow hardly qualifies as a "mobile" quarterback. Stopping the Florida run game and making Tebow beat the Sooners with the pass sounds like a sound game plan to me. With the drubbing Utah just put on Alabama, Florida's win over the Tide looks much less impressive.

Picker, I hope your love affair with the SEC is beginning to sour. Utah crushed (and I do mean, CRUSHED) Alabama - utter humiliation. Much worse than Boise did to Oklahoma. Somehow I doubt you'll be talking about this thrashing 2 weeks from now, much less 2 years. Notice how slow Alabama's (vaunted SEC) D looked against Utah? Utah's offense is nowhere near as quick as Oklahoma's...see where I'm going with this?

Who picked the huge upset of Mississippi outright over the Texas Tech Red Faders?

Oh. What do you know.

Right here.

Then who picked another outright dog, Kentucky over Dr. Lou Jr.?

Why. What do you know.

The Picker, thank you very moderately.

And then who picked Utah to stay within ten of absent-minded Bama?

The hat trick students.

Mayday: The Big 12 South defenses. Mayday. Mayday.
Sooner defenders are at risk.

Fire the crooks: Alabama was sleepwalking. But you're right, Utah won much more easily than did Florida.

Bronco Tebow isn't that bad a thrower.

Utah's dominance absolutely should give OU confidence.

Stoops is a so-so favorite, but a dangerous dog.

Utah is number one, plain and simple.
