Heupel no longer a Gophers candidate

Heupel

Oklahoma quarterbacks coach Josh Heupel is apparently not a candidate for the offensive coordinator post at Minnesota.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Gophers head coach Tim Brewster has denied an Internet report that he offered Heupel the job, and the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Heupel is no longer a candidate.

Heupel on Tuesday replied to a Tulsa World text message query by saying, "turned down opportunity."

The report originally was published on the Web site SoonerScoop.com that Heupel had been offered the job, but Brewster told the Pioneer Press, "I haven't offered anybody the job."

Heupel, a native of Aberdeen, S.D., told the Tulsa World during the fall that he grew up a Gophers fan and chose his jersey, No. 14, because of Rickey Foggie, the Gophers' one-time option quarterback under Lou Holtz.

Heupel is a rising star in the coaching ranks because of his work in 2006 with former OU quarterback Paul Thompson and over the last two seasons with current QB Sam Bradford. In their first season as a starter, Thompson and Bradford exceeded public expectations and led the Sooners to the Big 12 Conference title.

This year, Bradford guided OU to a record third straight Big 12 title, set numerous school records and won the Heisman Trophy.

Heupel, you don't have to lie to impress us. We all love and respect you no matter what. Stay here with the Sooners and go get us another BIG12 Championship.

So how about that Bradford said to a Coach Heupel that he really admires...."Look I will stay another year and then we can go together as a package deal"

Perhaps it was a matter of wording. The job was never offered from Minnesota because Heupel turned down the "opportunity" to even take that step and have talks with them and listen. Or maybe he listened while they were also talking to others, and he decided he didn't want to be considered any longer? You just don't know.....but its not fair to say that he lied.
