Comparing Stoops to the legends
By BILL HAISTEN World Sports Writer

With last week's Bowl Championship Series loss to Florida, Bob Stoops completed a full decade as Oklahoma's football coach.
How do his first 10 years measure to the first 10 of legendary Sooner coaches Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer?
"Bob took over a program that was in the dump, and he turned it around immediately," said Sooner historian Mike Treps, who has closely followed the program for 57 years. "In terms of a great 10-year period, I think Bob would have to be right behind Wilkinson.
"But to me, what Bud Wilkinson accomplished in his first 10 seasons was amazing. Before Bud took over, we weren't even the best team in the state. Oklahoma A&M and Tulsa were better. Bud took a non-entity and turned it into a national power."
Through the first 10 seasons of his 17-season run at OU, Wilkinson had a 94-8-3 record with three national titles. By the end of his 10th season, OU had a 40-game win streak. In 1957, his 11th season, that streak was extended to a national-record 47 straight.
Switzer was OU's coach for 16 seasons. At his 10-season mark, he was 98-17-3 with two national titles.
Stoops is 109-24 with one national title.
In the history of college football, only one other school — Notre Dame — has had a trio that compares to OU's Bud, Barry and Bob.
Through their first 10 seasons at OU, Wilkinson, Switzer and Stoops all had a winning percentage better than .800. Through the first 10 seasons of their respective time at Notre Dame, Knute Rockne, Frank Leahy and Ara Parseghian each had a success rate better than .800.
The Florida loss was Stoops' third consecutive setback in a BCS championship contest. Noting that there has been some talk-radio criticism of Stoops in the week since the Florida game, Treps laughed.
"How many schools would give their eye tooth for a coach like Bob Stoops?" said Treps, who in 1972-98 worked at OU as sports information director and an assistant athletic director but is best known for having done 24 seasons of Sooner football radio.
"Bob coached in a national championship game four times in 10 years," Treps said. "That in itself is remarkably impressive, but we have a society that looks at the negative more than the positive.
"If you have a flat tire, you don't get out of your car to admire the three good tires. You dwell on the one bad one. Society is like that."
Treps today: At the end of the 1998 season (John Blake's final season as coach), Treps retired from the OU radio booth. Today, the Milwaukee native is 75, still resides in Norman, plays a lot of golf and remains a diehard fan of the Chicago Cubs.
Of his dedication to the Cubs, Treps said, "It is the albatross of my life."
Treps was an OU freshman in 1951. "The first time I met Bud, he got up from behind his desk and shook my hand," Treps recalls. "I was a scrawny kid, shaking like a leaf."
Treps describes Switzer as having been "a lovable outlaw. Everybody loves outlaws. Barry had a lot of baggage, either perceived or real."
Pageantry ain't cheap: To send the Oklahoma State marching band to San Diego for the Holiday Bowl and the Oklahoma marching band to Miami, Fla., for the BCS championship game, the universities spent a combined total of more than $500,000.
Baseball tickets: In 2002, according to Business Week, the average cost of a Major League Baseball ticket was $18.31. The average cost in 2008 was $25.43. The most expensive average was $48.80 at Boston's Fenway Park.
In response to the economic crisis, several big-league clubs are freezing or reducing prices this year.
Wilkinson, Switzer, Stoops: The first 10 seasons
With last week's BCS championship loss to Florida, coach Bob Stoops completed his first decade as Oklahoma's football coach. A look at the first 10 seasons of the Bud Wilkinson, Barry Switzer and Stoops eras at OU:
Bud Wilkinson
Inherited program with three conference titles in four seasons
First 10 seasons with Sooners (1947-56)
Overall record: 94-8-3 (.910)
Three national titles, 10 conference titles, 8-2 vs. Texas
Longest win streak: 40
Barry Switzer
Inherited program with two-year record of 22-2
First 10 seasons with Sooners (1973-82)
Overall record: 98-17-3 (.843)
Two national titles, eight conference titles, 5-4-1 vs. Texas
Longest win streak: 28
Bob Stoops
Inherited program with five consecutive non-winning seasons
First 10 seasons with Sooners (1999-2008)
Overall record: 109-24 (.820)
One national title, six conference titles, 6-4 vs. Texas
Longest win streak: 20

Just so you are aware.. the name "Big Game Bob" isn't meant to imply that he does well and he wins big games because he doesn't. Legendary? Maybe, but for all the wrong reasons! A true Chokelahoma Looser.

If you read Barry's book he claims, as I do too, a 4th title. One year on probabtion; it was either 73 or 76, they were not allowed to play in a bowl game nor on tv. Yet they were still voted #1 in the coach's poll. THAT I think is more prestigeous than any media poll. To be voted the champion by your peers cannot be matched.
And to crybaby stoops, you must be a "whining gundy" fan. or a "help me out brown" fan.

You are correct rogerq. It was 73 and I have a 7up bottle proclaiming that title, although it was not recognized due to probation.

Could he be called 'Big Game Bob' because he constantly gets the Sooners to the 'National Limelight' BIG games? I'll take that any day from a coach....b2r

I definitely think Bob had the biggest hurdles when he inherited the program. Barry and Bud inherited a winning and relatively successful program. Bob had to turn around a team that had 5 consecutive losing seasons and made them into Nat'l contenders every year.

With friends who used to work for Switzer Petroleum, I can tell you Bob does not have the liver damage to compare to him. Screwdriver Barry is a legend in his own mind. I saw people at the OU/Texas game wanting to shake his hands in the bathroom. Grown men get giddy at his sight. He rambles around and acts a bit like the late Jack Palance. His knees are real bad and he now has a rather awkward swagger.

I am one Sooner who is quite happy to have BobStoops as our coach. I do think Wilson may need to be less predictable at offense. Keep up the good work coach. Go Sooners

I too am a Sooner fan that loves and supports Bob Stoops. Im very happy that he is Ou's head coach. His assistants are great too. I challenge any Defensive cordinator to do a better job than Venables with no big name stars, injuries to starters, and early departures for the NFL draft(Curtis Lofton and Reggie Smith). They played excellent against Texas Tech, Missouri, and Florida. 3 of the biggest games of the year for Oklahoma.

Lets also clear up the confusion of the nickname "Big Game Bob". For starters it still applies.Bob Stoops has gotten the Sooners to 1 of only a handful of Big Games almost every year (BCS CHAMPIONSHIP,ROSE BOWL,SUGAR BOWL,FIESTA BOWL,AND ORANGE BOWL)Also consider this fact.If you lose more than twice in a year, your probably not gonna be playing in a BCS bowl game.So to me every game is big game when the stakes are that high.Under Bob Stoops,OU wins about 85% of the games they play.He is big game Bob.Remember we do have 2 BCS trophies sitting in Norman because of Bob.And we will win the next Big game!

Hog - Urban Meyer is 83-17 at Utah and Florida with 2 National championships and one undefeated season at Utah. I'd say he's better.
Pete Carroll is 88-15 with 2 national championships. I'd say he's much better.

One thing the article failed to mention that might be taken into consideration is the amount of money paid to win national titles by the three coaches. UO has been and always will be crooked, cheaters.

When comparing the OU coaches you must also take into account the fact that Stoops has to deal with the NCAA wide scholarship limitations that have helped create more parity in college football. When Bud and Barry Coached they didn't have to worry when they played a team like Oregon. Also, the Big 8 was much weaker, with the only real threat being Nebraska. Colorado wasn't even very good until after Barry got caught a cheatin', I am still quite impressed by what Bob Stoops has done, and I am not an OU fan. How easily you forget Gibbs, Schnellenberger, and Blake. Let's go back to that time and complain about Bob Stoops.

True. St-OOPS is a good coach, just not a legend! I think its pretty stupid to hear all the O-Who fans constantly "we got to this game, hey atleast we got to the big game" Just quit the whining, because to be a "Champion" you must play a champion AND WIN!!!!!!!!!!! Just funny that after every big game loss, O-Who fans/columnists resort to wasting our time with articles trying to fall back on any sort of bright spot. But what can you expect from a team who got their nickname from being thieves?

...and a "Chokelahoma Looser" is not a hard one to figure out Roy D. Lets be a little clearer for the OU alumn.... Chokelahoma Gooners. It's like Sooners but not. Do you see know? How much do i owe you for the pizza?
