OU loses another commitment
By JOHN E. HOOVER World Sports Writer

Last Modified: 1/21/2009 2:55 AM
Oklahoma's football team has reportedly lost another verbal commitment from the 2009 class, and could be on the verge of losing another — all to Big 12 South programs.
According to the
Rivals.com
network, Darius Jones, an athlete/defensive back from Marshall, Texas, has changed his commitment from OU to Baylor. The network also reports that Brandon Mahoney, a linebacker from Fossil Ridge High School in Keller, Texas, is wavering on his commitment and is planning an official visit to Texas A&M.
Last week, Eric Ward, a wide receiver from Wichita Falls, Texas, decommitted from OU and gave a verbal pledge to Texas Tech.
Verbal commitments are nonbinding. Players can't sign until Feb. 4.
"My heart was never into Oklahoma," Jones told the Rivals Web site
SicEmSports.com
, which covers Baylor news and recruiting.
Jones was quoted on the Web site as saying Baylor offered him an opportunity to play offense, where he figured it was likely OU would play him on defense. He also said coach Art Briles' signing last year of five-star quarterback Robert Griffin helped him make his decision.
"A player like Robert Griffin, he could have gone anywhere," Jones said. "For some reason, he chose Baylor. There must be something special about Baylor, because an athlete like Robert Griffin, he's pretty special."
Mahoney's father, Bryan, was quoted on the Texas A&M site
AggieYell.com
saying his son was "driven by an opportunity to play sooner." OU currently has commitments from four high school linebackers (all rated as high as or higher than Mahoney's three-star Rivals rating), and the Sooners have their top seven linebackers from 2008 back next year, with three other underclassmen already on campus.
Jones' decommitment gives the Sooners 21 verbal pledges for the '09 class. According to
Rivals.com
, OU's current commitment list ranks 13th nationally. Only the Sooners' 2007 class, at No. 14, was ranked lower.

I think we're going to be fine at LB for a few years now, so this isn't that big. We need the scholarships for some of the WR's we're recruiting anyway.

I agree that we are fine at LB. I don't understand why Eric Ward doesn't want to be at OU with thier need for WR. I could see if the offense was run based, but Sam threw for almost 5k yards last season. Oh well, someone else will step up.

I'm Sooner born and I'm Sooner bred but if we could win a bowl game these rats wouldn't be abandoning ship. I love Bob but I'm getting tired of having to try to explain why we lose bowls. My commander is from Boise State, my Sergeant Major is from West Virginia, makes for a hard day at work.

Poke, don't make OSU fans look stupid. I hate it when other fans do that and make the school that I cheer for bad. Show some class, despite the fact some OU fans don't show any class...many OU fans are bandwagon fans and didn't even go to a single class at the school. The fact is, they have won. We should show class anyway. The other fact is, we are getting better and gaining respect. Let Gundy's "men" do the talking on the field.

Come on Tulsa World. A few days ago you printed articles stating that this was the best recruiting class that OU has ever had. I doubt that a couple 3 star athletes drops them from the best to the worst class they have ever recruited. It doesn't take a genius to figure out when you are loaded at linebacker why a could would change his mind, but NO, these OSwho losers get on here and say it is a "sinking ship". I guess if OSwho was loaded at ANY position, you would understand but this is proof that you are not.
Also, OSwho fans have resorted to where the only argument they have is that some OU fans did not go to school there. If you would put a winning program out there then maybe you would also attract fans across the state. In the meantime, you go ahead and keep using that as your "COMEBACK"!!!

A person can have a relative alumni , such as a brother or sister, from OU to feel the connectedness. You don't actually need to go to school there.

BOOMER SOONER!!!!!!!
These players didn't want to sit on the bench as a redshirt frosh so they are going somewhere they can play, but you're less likely to get a NFL scout to watch you if you play for Baylor.

SportsFanatic, rogerq and all the Boomer LOOSER fans need to grow up... as is apparent. The rats ARE abandoning ship! No highly regarded recruit wants to go from highschool where or JC where they've been winning, only to come to the Chokelahoma Sooners and be letdown every year. As for the comment "not being loaded at ANY position" that is a total joke! I guess OSU doesn't have Dez (a top 4 wideout NATIONALLY!) and "Spud" Hunter who led the big twelve in rushing yards the whole year!!!!! Check your facts before you open your conceded, gaping mouth.
I'm Cowboy born and Cowboy bred but i'd rather be dead than in Sooner red! GO STATE!!!!!!

I love how poke fans seem to always come up with this asinine notion that you have to have gone to school to go to a game. Do you think this is the case with other big time programs such as Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, etc...? The answer would be no. OU has such a following because they appeal to the Oklahoma masses. OSU doesn't. Only Alumni or relatives of Alumni and students have any interest in attending OSU football games. Go ahead, keep it all to yourselves. Believe me, no one minds.

cowpoke, are you serious? See that's the mentality of Poke fans. They're perfectly content with playing in any secondary bowl. I'd much rather play for the National Championship on a regular basis and lose than to never be good enough to get there. OSU will never be one of the "Big Boys" on a year in and year out basis in football. But as long as you get to any ole bowl, I guess you'll be happy.

And just like O-Who fans to dodge their previous comments once someone points out that they're wrong. Go hide like you always do after your team gets their annual beat down. What do you consider "playing for Championship on regular basis"? Dont worry i guess the program and the fans are glad to be content with choking in big games every year. Heads will roll sooner than later...wait and see. Don't act like you ALL weren't sweating the last Bedlam game either! You got whooped for majority of the game so dont play like you deserve wins or have a right to any higher recognition than your in-state rival! Last year 7-6 this year 9-4. Hmmm would seem to me that we're only getting better and attracting more money and better recruits! Hey when you see Gatorade does it make you mad? Lol! GO GATORS! Thanx for another hilarious end to O-Who's season.

I love that OSU is gaining recruits while O-Who is losing them. Funny but not hard to understand given O-Who's recent 6 year history!

cowpoke, he was talking about being loaded at a posistion not just having a single player that is good in a posistion yes dez, and kendall are great players but you need more than one good reciever and running back. Yes you have totson but come on how good of a receiver can he be if he doesn't have anyone else to take the double teams off of him. aka loaded!!

Obviously Big 12 Championships don't mean anything to people like you. I bet your fellow poke fans feel differently. Let's see, three in a row for the Sooners and possibly four this year. Six out of seven tries. Not too shabby, even by your low standards.
I agree with brb549. Rather be in in the NC game and lose than not be there at all. Don't have a chance to win if you're not there.
And a NC for the cowboys ain't happening. Even with Pickens' money. Let that sink in.
