Receiver picks Sooners

Auburn, Georgia, South Carolina and Southern Mississippi all wanted Cameron Kenney to come play college football for them.

But since last May, the only piece of recruiting correspondence Kenney kept in his bedroom back home in Dacula, Ga., was a "we've got our eye on you" letter from Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops.

"Coming from the South, you don't really hear too much about Oklahoma," said Kenney, a wide receiver at Garden City (Kan.) Community College. "But being down here for two years, you really start to hear about Big 12 football, and they're very dominant. It'll be a great program to be a part of."

On Monday, Kenney gave his verbal commitment to play for Stoops at OU.

The deal, though, wasn't sealed until Stoops and wide receivers coach Jay Norvell flew Monday to Briscoe Field in Gwinnett County, Ga., to meet Kenney's mother, Patti Roth. Roth previously met Norvell on an in-home visit, but hadn't met Stoops before.

"He was the nicest man in the whole world, I swear. I can't even explain," she said. "They didn't have to come see me, and they did. And it meant a lot, just knowing that my son's going to be in his hands."

"It shows a lot, him going out of his way to do that," Kenney said. "That meant a lot to her, definitely."

Kenney played just one year of high school football and said neither his test scores nor his core curriculum qualified him academically for major college football. So he landed at Garden City, which produced recent OU players Phil Loadholt and J.R. Bryant. He and his mother said he will graduate in May and is on track to arrive in Norman in June.

In two seasons as a Broncbuster, Kenney caught 86 passes for 1,203 yards and 8 touchdowns. At 6-foot-2 and 195 pounds, Kenney a soccer player growing up has good hands, explosive leaping ability, 4.48 speed and is both strong and elusive. He said he will play wideout at OU the Sooners' most immediate position of need.

Kenney originally gave a verbal commitment to Auburn in August, but changed his mind after a coaching change there. He visited OU on Jan. 17 and Georgia last weekend, then made up his mind on the way back to Kansas.

Study and play hard, Cameron. It's a great University to earn a degree at, and the Sooners enjoy a shot at the National Title every year.
