Position watch

Defensive line

This year's incoming class probably won't need to contribute in 2009. Not with All-American Gerald McCoy at one tackle, junior Adrian Taylor at the other and DeMarcus Granger coming back from successful back surgery. End is stacked, with Auston English, Frank Alexander and Jeremy Beal all back. Still, newcomer Justin Chaisson already has the physical strength to compete at end, and if Granger isn't completely healthy, it's possible JaMarkus McFarland will be asked to play tackle. In looking way ahead, Rivals.com reported Thursday that Daniel Noble, a defensive tackle from Flower Mound, Texas, has become OU's first verbal commitment of the 2010 class.

News of the day

Coach Bob Stoops was in Bastrop, La., on Thursday night, for an in-home visit to Rueben Randle, the nation's No. 1 high school wide receiver — and Rivals.com's No. 2 overall player — in a late attempt to convince Randle to play next season with Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford instead of LSU. Stoops spent Wednesday in Las Vegas, presumably visiting Chaisson as well as future prospects. A scheduled Thursday visit to Los Angeles (WR Randall Carroll) was canceled, and a Friday visit was scheduled in St. Louis, where Terry Hawthorne, Parade Magazine's top WR prospect, is strongly considering OU and Illinois.

Countdown to signing day

The class is ranked 12th nationally by Rivals.com and sixth by Scout.com. Those would improve if OU lands Randle, but that may not happen. Randle's coach, Brad Bradshaw, told a Louisiana television station not to expect too much of Randle too soon because "he has to learn a completely different system, a very advanced system, what coach (Gary) Crowton (LSU's offensive coordinator) does, and coach (Les) Miles and his staff." WR Tyrece Gaines of Butler (Kansas) CC, told Rivals.com he'd make his decision Friday between OU and Oregon.

Stoopid's not going to get Randle and how can Hawthorne be Parade's top WR prospect with a 1.38 GPA? Guess the only D1 school he could get into was uo.
