Position watch: Running back

OU's only verbal at the position is Jonathon Miller (6-foot, 180) of Naaman Forest HS in Garland, Texas. It's unlikely Miller will see the field this season, as Chris Brown, DeMarco Murray and Mossis Madu (2,697 yards, 40 TDs between them) all return. Then there are last year's freshmen Justin Johnson and Jermie Calhoun. Miller may have to wait. Still, his numbers — 1,984 yards and 25 TDs as a junior, 1,881 and 19 as a senior — are impressive.

News of the day

OU got a verbal commitment for 2009 from defensive end Jarrett Brown on Sunday, a 6-foot-4, 242-pound senior from Bowie HS in Arlington, Texas.

Rivals.com reported later Sunday that linebacker Brandon Mahoney of Fossil Ridge HS in Keller, Texas, has decommitted from OU and verbally committed to Texas Tech. East Central DT Pearlie Graves also is said to be reconsidering his commitment to Michigan and, after flirting with OU, is reportedly considering Tech.

OU now has 22 verbal pledges. Verbal commitments are non-binding. Players can sign letters of intent beginning Wednesday.

Countdown to signing day

Mahoney's departure from the commitment list won't drop OU out of the No. 12 spot by Rivals.com, or the No. 6 spot by Scout.com. Wednesday is signing day. This was the final weekend for official visits — in-home and campus — and begins a quiet period.
