UT football coaches get bonuses for Big 12 title

Texas may have removed an asterisked reference to winning the 2008 Big 12 football championship from a team meeting room, but UT's assistant coaches are still cashing in.

The school announced Monday that a dozen assistant coaches and staff members will receive bonuses totaling $44,000 for winning the Big 12 Conference championship.

During the regular season, Texas defeated Oklahoma and Missouri — both participants in December's league title game — but fell .0128 behind OU in the final regular season Bowl Championship Series standings, one of the criteria the Big 12 uses to break a three-way tie and decide its North and South divisional winners.

Texas lost to Texas Tech, and Tech lost to OU, creating the South Division's tie among three teams with identical records (11-1 overall, 7-1 Big 12) and shared head-to-head results.

In the Big 12's eyes, Texas shares the '08 Big 12 South crown with Tech and OU, but the Sooners are the league's sole champion by virtue of defeating Missouri. Still, Texas earlier in the week had hung "2008*" on a wall in the Moncrief-Neuhaus Complex announcing all the school's conference championships.

According to Sunday's Austin American-Statesman newspaper, an unnamed school official was quoted as saying, "We beat both teams (OU and Missouri). I thought that (championship game in Kansas City) was for the runner-up spot."

That initially drew a firestorm of criticism, so the "2008*" reference reportedly was removed.

Then Monday, the school announced that UT athletic director DeLoss Dodds had received permission from university president William Powers Jr. and the university men's athletic council to pay the championship bonuses.

"I think this was the right decision," Powers was quoted on the newspaper's Web site. "A flip of a coin basically deprived them of the ability to earn that part of their compensation."

The team's two coordinators, strength coach and director of football operations each will receive $5,000. The rest of the staff will get a check for $3,000.

"This was a chance to say thank you," Dodds told the newspaper.

Head coach Mack Brown, whose reported base pay is $2.91 million, did not receive the championship bonus, the newspaper reported. Brown's contract calls for him to be paid $50,000 for winning the South and another $100,000 for winning the conference.

Bob Stoops, who was paid $6.11 million last season (including a one-time, $3 million, 10-year anniversary bonus), received $60,000 for winning the South and another $20,000 for winning his fifth Big 12 title. Stoops' base compensation for 2008, not including performance bonuses, was $2.775 million.

Like OU, Texas' athletic department pays for its programs with no assistance from state funds.

Just like the short-horns to claim something they didn't earn outright.

I'd certainly be embarrassed if the Sooners had hung such a banner under identical circumstances. But...what can you expect from an ex K-Stater and the entire state of Texas?

What is amazing is that Texas acts like this is the first time something like this has happened.

For someone to claim that a "flip of a coin" decided who was conference champs is ridiclous. They knew very well before the season started how the tie-breaker would be decided, yet they still want to claim they were cheated.

Mack Brown is the biggest Whiner in the history of college football!!!

Enjoy your bonus this year. You will not get one next year.

Good for them. They deserved it and were clearly robbed by the Big 12. The Gooners again proved they are frauds by choking in yet another BCS game. Small-game Stoops strikes again!

They can do whatever they want with their money, but to say, "A flip of a coin basically deprived them of the ability to earn that part of their compensation." is not true. The deciding factor on who would play for the Big 12 Championship from the South was based on rankings and strength of schedule factors....not a coin flip. READ MY LIPS, TEXAS! YOU DID NOT EVEN PLAY FOR THE BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIP....LET ALONE WIN IT! Did somemone down there get hypnotized to believe they did win it? Even though they beat OU & Missouri in the regular season, that wouldn't mean they would win the Big 12 Championship game.
I've never seen such IDIOTS in my life!
Can't wait for this year's OU-Texas game....the "ass"terisk game

This year Texas Tech won't bail you out like last year. How many times do you think you can put it in reverse and back into a Big 12 championship game?

I think UT should be out even more money now that this precident has been set. UT has only won the Big 12 title once since 1997, that was in 2005. Since they get bonuses for NOT WINNING, I think those Football Assistants are owed a bunch more money. Nice job Texas!

Maybe they can use some of the money to wipe away the tears I am sure they are still shedding...

Navin, you're kidding right? UT OOC schedule was oh-so tough. OU was playing better ball, and OU lost to the National Champion! UT needed a game winnign drive to beat a sucky Big 10 team and barely beat Okie State. UT can go on touting thier wins in the Alamo and Cotton bowls against inferior teams. I'll take the losses on the big stage over wins in lower tier bowls. The thing that needs to be done is the big 12 needs to do away with the north and south divisions and a playoff format be established for the post-season.
