Five questions from the Red/White Game

What happened at wide receiver?

Naturally, Ryan Broyles stood out. He caught a 12-yard pass from Sam Bradford on the first play of the scrimmage, then turned in a 14-yard third-down catch and an 11-yarder on second-and-long. After that, though, consistency was hard to find. Adron Tennell got open for a TD catch from Bradford, but later scuffled on a deep third-down incompletion.

How did the new offensive line look?

Not good. Stephen Good, the projected starter at right guard, sat out. So did Jarvis Jones, a top contributor so far this spring. That left a patchwork of blockers that obviously still has a lot of work to do. In the first half alone, the offensive line gave up five quarterback sacks (of the touched-down variety) and two holding penalties. Defensive end Frank Alexander collected three sacks.

Have Landry Jones and Drew Allen gotten enough snaps at quarterback?

Allen, who left high school a semester early to take part this spring, still looks painfully raw — reading coverages and communication with receivers. But Landry Jones, a redshirt freshman next season, was impressive on a handful of plays, including a short TD pass to Jameel Owens on which he sidestepped pressure, scrambled right and threw left. His deep out to Mossis Madu, though, was anticipated by Dom Franks, intercepted and returned 42 yards for a TD. Jones also hit a third-and-15 dart to Ryan Broyles.

Are Jermie Calhoun and Justin Johnson ready for prime time?

With the way the offensive line blocked, there's no way to tell. The best runs of the first half were produced by Mossis Madu. Calhoun showed life in the second half with five consecutive attempts (he plowed over a Jayden Bird tackle attempt on an 11-yard burst). Johnson's straight-ahead style didn't seem to mesh with a lack of blocking at the point of attack.

Did we get a true look at linebacker?

Not even close. Strongside starter Keenan Clayton, a 2009 senior, sat out with a high ankle sprain. Middle linebacker Ryan Reynolds, another '09 senior, is still coming back from a torn ACL and hasn't done anything all spring. Middle linebacker Austin Box, another potential starter, is recovering from elbow surgery. Backup Brandon Crow also sat out.
