OSU's fearless leader

OSU’s Zac Robinson dives in for a touchdown against Indiana during the Cowboys’ Insight Bowl win on Dec. 31. MIKE SIMONS/Tulsa World file

Robinson tough, aggressive, but can he stay healthy?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Oklahoma State football coach Mike Gundy loves that Zac Robinson is a fearless, physical, aggressive quarterback.

Among the more memorable 2007 Cowboy plays was Robinson's blistering block of a Nebraska linebacker. Among the more prominent components of the 2007 Cowboy offensive attack were Robinson's 847 rushing yards, nine rushing touchdowns and usually flawless execution of the option game.

But Gundy also recognizes the importance of having Robinson stay healthy and on the field. Neither of the OSU backup quarterbacks — Alex Cate and Brandon Weeden — has taken a college game snap.

"I worry about that every night, just before I take a sleeping pill to go to sleep," Gundy said on Tuesday during his Big 12 Media Days press conference.

That's the dilemma Gundy faces — getting maximum mileage from Robinson while somehow reducing the wear and tear.

Gundy's mission is to convince Robinson that it is OK to escape out of bounds instead of lowering a shoulder and plowing into a defender, that it's wise to slide instead taking a jolting shot from a safety.

"Most of Zac's runs came off of scrambling," Gundy said. "There was the one option play we ran, but most of the hits (that Robinson absorbed) were when he was scrambling. He'd be downfield, and all he had to do was run out of bounds, and he didn't. It makes me breathe a little easier when he runs out of bounds."

Unseating Bobby Reid as the starter last year, Robinson made 11 starts and broke the single-season school record for total offense (3,617 yards). He also set the school record for single-game total offense— 486 yards against Texas.

With two remaining seasons of eligibility, Robinson has a chance to smash several OSU career records, but only if he's healthy and taking snaps.

"It's tough to pull the reins back," Robinson said. "I've been playing like that my whole life. When the lights are on, I'm going to play the way I've always played.

"I know it took quite a toll on my body last year. I'm assuming there won't be as many called quarterback run plays, but there will be times when nothing is there and I've got to pull it down and go."

Robinson benefits from the return of four offensive line starters. The Cowboy line allowed only 11 sacks last season and was effective in run-blocking. Ranked seventh nationally in rushing last season, OSU got more than 2,100 rushing yards from Dantrell Savage, Kendall Hunter and Keith Toston.

Savage (1,272 yards) has graduated, but Gundy believes this season's tailbacks — Hunter, Toston and junior college transfer Beau Johnson— can surpass the 2,000 mark in combined yardage.

"This is my fourth year in this offense, and most of our offensive linemen also have been in the program a long time," Robinson said. "We shouldn't miss a beat from where we were last year."

Robinson admitted to being jarred by the scope of the Media Days experience. For two hours, he was approached by scores of reporters.

"I knew it was a big deal," he said. "I wish somebody had told me that it was a huge deal."

One year earlier, he was a mostly anonymous backup, just hoping for the opportunity to play.

"It's a lot different," Robinson said. "You get a lot of confidence, knowing that your team looks at you for leadership and making plays."

Mike "I have 1 more season" Gundy. It is a shame that a talented QB doesn't have a head coach capable of coaching him, or anyone else.

Just a note of clarification FWIW - Alex Cate has in fact "taken a college game snap" at oSu (Last year mop up duty agianst Fla Atlantic I think)

Neither Cate nor Weeden has taken enough snaps to be considered tested.
Weeden supposedly has the stronger arm, but Cate may have the advantage of practice and exposure to the offense.

I can't wait to see how this season plays out. Of course, OSU will be an underdog going into the Big 12 - which seems to bode much better for the Cowboys instead of the favorite role.

I wonder who'll be the premier running back. It looks like a very tight race for the top two spots. As long as Toston doesn't lay the ball down, it's going to be very competitive at the RB position.

GO POKES!

One more thing. Gundy does have a lot of pressure to improve this year and he has made some rookie coaching mistakes in his last few years, but one must realize how much has has accomplished in his young, headcoaching career.
I believe this will be Gundy's breakout year. He's matured while also showing a great deal of compassion for his team, coaches and the university. He's been able to hire and maintain some quality assistants and let them coach. He's cleaned up as much of the mess that is today's college athlete (and I don't think any school, especially OU, is without their problem players) and tried hard to instill a civic and scholastic responsibility within his players.

A tough, tough Big 12 schedule is riding on Mike Gundy's shoulders. Everyone (even Baylor) should be improved this year.

I'm hoping Mike Gundy has the same results as a headcoach as he had as a player. My money is on Mike Gundy to evolve into a great headcoach.

Ummm Dan? You're kidding right? If it weren't for Pickens Gundy would be gone, he's the only one willing to pay for his OJT. The season ticket holders sure aren't. Take a peek at those empty seats this year. Gundy is an embarassment as a coach.

Dan, let's review Gundy's "accomplishments" (BTW, he's not building any of the facilities. That's being done by donars.):

1. Inherited a Alamo Bowl team with 15 returning starters, got swept by a weak North (at the time), got beat by Baylor, and finished dead last in the Big XII.

2. "Improved" to a eye-popping 6-6 regular season record, got thumped by a Sun Belt mid-major, and went to the Jim Bob's Bait Shop Back Bayou Bowl where he defeated a coachless team that finished with a losing record.

3. 6-6 AGAIN, got thumped by ANOTHER Sun Belt mid-major, went to the Dry Desert Gulch Dot Com Bowl. (32 Bowls = 64 teams... 119 Div. IA teams altogether... half of 119 teams equals 59.5 teams... 64 teams in one Bowl or another... 59.5 is half of all the teams... hhhmmmmm)

4. Recruited so well bringing HIS players into HIS system over the last four years that he desperately went the JUCO route in mass this year.

5. The three year Bobby Reid fiasco. (Woods or Reid, Reid or Woods, Reid or Pena, Pena or Reid, Reid or Robinson, Robinson or Reid.)

6. The "rant" fiasco.

7. The ever-memorable, cockroach fans.

8. Progressively declining ticket sales and attendance each and every year.

9. 4th quarter choke and humiliation.

10. Going to Athens touting the best offense in all of football.

11. One of the worst defenses in all of college football.

12. A losing 18-19 record.

Any "accomplishment" I missed?

Dan, I DO "realize how much he has accomplished in his young, headcoaching career." Do you?

Don't get me started on how well he handed the ball to future hall of famers Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders or how incredibly he lobbed balls to Hart Lee Dykes as a player. You obviously missed his performance in the '88 Nebraska game... made Al Pena look like a Manning.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot about Chris Collins, Bowman's drugs before and after, recruiting known non-qualifiers to boost recruiting rankings, over offering then reneging on scholarships, and tagging Miles players as "thugs" only to retain and promote Miles Recruiting Coordinator.

Those "accomplishments" should be noted as well.

dANd--you are an idiot
thank you six gun, you point by point proved my point that Dand is an idiot.

I wound add the player Chris Collins, Gumby "researched" his back ground and his rape charge. Thougth he was a person to give a scholly to. But then Collins pleads guilty, Gumby then has to wait for directions from TBone before he kicks him off the team

Gumby's and idiot
