OSU refuting middle-of-pack forecast
Dez Bryant scores on a punt return Saturday. Bryant has been impressive for 2-0 OSU. STEPHEN HOLMAN/Tulsa World

CONVENTIONAL wisdom suggests two weeks into a college football season is too early to draw permanent conclusions.
To heck with that theory.
I'm already convinced the media blew it with one preseason prediction about Oklahoma State. And we might have been dead wrong a second time about the Cowboys when the preseason polls were released in July.
Do you know how many Pokes made the all-Big 12 first team? Go to the head of the class if you guessed zip, zero, nada or none.
That's right. Not a single Cowboy was among the 26 players selected on offense, defense and special teams.
OSU is a lock to have at least two players on the postseason All-Big 12 team if wide receiver Dez Bryant and running back Kendall Hunter continue anywhere near their current pace. The Super Sophomore Duo is one of the most lethal in the league, with Hunter leading the Big 12 in rushing (158.2 yards per game) and Bryant doing the same in receiving (163.0) and total yards (242.0).
OSU needed Bryant and Hunter to fill the large holes left with the departure last season of two senior standouts — wide receiver Adarius Bowman and running back Dantrell Savage. Bryant and Hunter have been dazzling in wins at Washington State and against Houston.
While individual honors are fine, it's as a team where OSU could make the preseason voters look really silly. The Cowboys were picked to finish fourth in the South Division, behind Oklahoma, Texas and Texas Tech, and ahead of Texas A&M and Baylor.
The poll's logic was sound. OSU must play road games at Texas and Texas Tech, Missouri and Colorado.
Thus far, the No. 3-ranked Sooners (2-0) have lived up to their billing. Ditto for No. 6 Missouri (2-0).
The Missouri game Oct. 11 remains a huge challenge. But it doesn't matter where OU is ranked when they come to Stillwater on Nov. 29, because emotion in the Bedlam Battle is often the deciding factor.
No. 8 Texas, No. 12 Texas Tech and Colorado are also off to 2-0 starts. But the Longhorns, Red Raiders and Buffaloes have shown they might have some defensive deficiencies that OSU's explosive offense can exploit.
Tech won at Nevada last week, but the Red Raiders' defense was gashed for 488 yards. In Bryant, Hunter, quarterback Zac Robinson and tight end Brandon Pettigrew, OSU returns several of the offensive weapons that rolled up 610 yards in a wild 49-45 win over the Red Raiders last season, which resulted in Tech coach Mike Leach firing his defensive coordinator the next day.
OSU knows it should have defeated the Longhorns last season when it took a 21-point lead into the fourth quarter. The valuable experience gained in that bitter loss should help the veteran Cowboys when they go to Austin on Oct. 25. So will a Texas secondary that is loaded with newcomers.
OSU's trip to Colorado Nov. 15 doesn't look nearly as daunting as it once did. Not after the Buffaloes had to score 14 in the fourth quarter last week at home to defeat Division I-AA Eastern Washington, 31-24.
"They (Buffs) got desperate, and they got lucky," Eastern Washington defensive back Ryan Kelly told the Spokane Spokesman Review after the game. "I don't like to talk bad about teams, but they aren't going to get far in the Big 12. They aren't playing like a Big 12 team. They're playing like a Big Sky team."
Ouch. Kelly wasn't the only player talking trash about Big 12 teams.
New Mexico State cornerback Davon House said that practices against the Aggies' offense has the secondary eager to take on Nebraska's offense this Saturday in Lincoln, because "we believe our receivers are 10 times better than their receivers."
Those negative comments came after Big 12 teams went 12-0 last Saturday, the first time in the league's 13-year history that all 12 schools won on the same weekend.
"When you have such parity in college football with 85 scholarships, you better be ready to play ever week," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "For every Big 12 team to win (last Saturday) is tough to accomplish.
"I've always thought the league was good. But when you see how far Missouri and Kansas have come, along with the emergence of the rest of the North, we're as competitive as any league in the country."
And Gundy just might have a team that turns out to be more competitive in the Big 12 than anyone thought or predicted two months ago.

Dave...there you go...jumping on a two game bandwagon.
Let's look at things realistically. They still have Gundy as a coach...and they're still going to finish behind OU, Texas and (likely) Texas Tech...that pretty much puts the Pokes in the middle of the pack.
Talk to us after October 25.

2curious - You seem a little angry. You better hope your Gooners shore up the special teams before Bedlam. Perhaps this article should have been about how the Gooners always get beat down in their annual bowl debacle. Would that have made you happier?
Stick to posting on Gooner articles and leave the others alone.

OSU has been 2-0 for several years, the two teams they played are really bad, let's get into BIg XII and see before any predictions are made

I am so sick of the bandwagon OU fans, dissing OSU. Atleast the people who support OSU, support them in their good times and bad and most of the OSU fans are graduates, unlike the bandwagon people who probably didn't even graduate from high school, let alone go to OU!

Actually snoop, Houston is a pretty good team. Our defense was a little shaky but it will keep improving. Go Pokes! I love the Gooners comment!

Snoop are you pretending that the two teams OU played were good? Even Washington is down from what it used to be. OU has not exactly played anyone either. Nor will they until the Big 12. Just take last year as an example Finally hit the road...got beat.

i have revised my prediction for os? from 6-6 to maybe 7-5. the offense looks like it might be as good as last year's but their defense hasn't changed. always take the "over" with these guys.

Maybe the media's logic is different from mine on this one, but I wouldn't have put OSU ahead of Tech because Tech did not lose their star receiver to graduation. Even though Dez showed promise, there was no way to predict that he would be able to do what he's done, even if it was against terrible teams(even though I really don't think Houston is terrible. Tulsa better be careful UH has a lot of talent on offense. That quarterback is good. He has phenomenal timing throwing between the lanes over the middle.). How would you even go about trying to replace Dantrelle Savage? We know now that Spud is Savage 2.0, but that wasn't apparent last year. Also, not apparent was how go Beau Johnson and Keith Toston would be. Either of those guys could transfer and start for Texas right now.
Anyways, OSU lost some huge games last year that if not for complete lack of depth on defense, they would have won. Depth on defense was at best unproven in the off-season with the fusion of JUCO players. You combine that with losing half of your offensive stars from the previous season and being best known for a starting then back-up quarterback that is leaving and trash talking your coach, how could you rate OSU anywhere but in the middle?
It certainly appeared that we had more to overcome than Tech this off-season and we still don't know how deep our defense really is. We haven't had to play them completely for a full game as of yet. I don't think we're going to be able to sit on a lead like we have been especially not against against Tech, Mizzou, and Texas. Even though I do think Tech and Mizzou are going to be shootouts. A&M's and Colorado's offenses at this point look so terrible that we might be able to just sit on the lead in those games and who knows what will happen in Bedlam at Stillwater.
Then we forget one major thing that as a fan that has followed them more than just the last few years I can never forget: This is OSU football who honestly can ever predict what we're going to do?

Dave, you are probably one of the guilty parties. Ok State still has some question marks inc a thus-far slow start from Zac Robinson. Yes, he recovered nicely but he still threw two picks which is not characteristic of his normal playing standard, and the defense.
Nontheless no one at this point should be doubting that the receiving corp is the best in the Big XII and Kendall Hunter is certainly worthy to be considered for some conference and nat'l honors but yes, the season is still young so let's see how it plays out...

To Hard Harry (nice name by the way): at least we get there. To Arthur: nice book. To pokeso6: there's a certain quality some teams possess that causes them to gain many bandwagon fans. Having trouble figuring it out? Get you a dip of "Cope" and put that Ag-Econ degree earnin brain to work. You can do it. I've seen you guys all point in unison to indicate you got a 1st down and know which direction your team's going so I know you can handle that. Aren't you a man? Aren't you 40? I'll give you a hint. It rhymes with dinner. I'm picturing a guy firing his pistols in the air with joy. Whoa. I gotta stop that.

Steff M.,
I'm thinking of a mascot that is an embarrassing symbol to the rest of the nation. I'm thinking of a mascot that represents a cheater and killing other civilized people and stealing land by finding government loopholes and breaking treaties. Oh that's right it's the SOONERS!
Also, last time I checked this was a college sport where the team was supposed to be tied to the university. I know that's amazing to most sooner fans, but people like me that had the chance to choose between the two and chose OSU do so frequently because we want to know that showing up to the game actually means we probably accomplished something.
Man those ag. econ. people must suck. Especially since many of them warned us against using ethanol for gas because it would increase food prices. Man, why would anyone listen to them.

Steff, first off, I cannot fathom how you can attempt (and trust me, it was nothing more than an attempt) to put down our mascot when you have horse pigs running around on your sideline. Who picks these mascots to represent your university? First Top Dawg and now this? But I gues it beats the alternative of having the depiction of a Sooner, by definition, out there.
Second, wow. Are you still using the Gundy "rant" quotes as the punchline for your comedic argument? Oh, what quick witt! People should have to pay to read the vast originality you put on display. Quit your day job immediately. You need to give MAD magazine a call. I'm sure they are always looking for a writer of your caliber.

You people are great. You're always more worried about OU fans and our opinion of you than about the state of your team. And it shows. As long as you get that 1 win against us every 7 or 8 years you're happy with going 6-6 and being in the "no one's watching but you bowl". And yes, Gundy's tirade is still funny and will be for a long time. That's why Jim Rome among others continually bring it back up. It's called humor. You guys take yourselves way to seriously. I guess I'd probably be a little edgy and self-defensive too if I had to root for a team that sucked AND had to wear orange gear while doing it. Maybe T Bone Sickens' money will pay off for you someday but I doubt it. And no, ancel, I'm in Claremore but I heard Mensa is nice this time of year. Isn't that in southern Mexico Mike? Where they have the annual "Running of the Horse-Pigs" and spell wit with 2 t's. Definitely keep your day job Mike. I'd hate to see all those overgrown yards around town. Oh yeah, Arthur, Greenpeace called: You're In! Don't worry though, Obama was going to lose even with your help.

Steff:
I quit reading your last comment after you referenced Jim Rome. That alone takes any credibility you may have had away. The sense of entitlement that OU fans have is overwhelmingly sickening only because most of you are from the same state as the rest of us and because due to all the bandwagoners OU has, you cant go anywhere without hearing a OU fan screeching like a bunch of test lab spider monkeys(which is ironic but I wont go there). When I think of the loudest buffoons in sports OU fans are right up there with Yankee fans and that can never be a good thing.

Nice Acer. You sound like someone who wouldn't like Romey. A typical fan who really doesn't know about or understand what it means to be passionate about sports. Probably never played anything after 4th grade except maybe clarinet or if you did you probably weren't very good. Ditto for FIRE GUNDY but he sounds more like a flautist. You just went to that school and there was nothing else to do on Saturdays in Stillwater so you got in the habit of being disappointed on weekends in the fall. It's cool. I'd be willing to bet you wear a Royals or Rangers hat around occasionally yet know very little about baseball. You just like rooting for the underdog because it's so shocking and exciting when they occasionally pull off an upset. Me, I decided when I was about ten that losing was no fun. "America loves a winner and will not tolerate a loser." George C. Scott from "Patton". Rent it. Watch it. Learn it. Go Yanks and Boomer Sooner baby. I'll give people back what they're giving as long as they wish. And this friendly banter is extremely laughable to me.
