TU-OSU meeting was long overdue

STILLWATER For the first time in 12 years for the first time in 4,381 days the University of Tulsa and Oklahoma State University men's basketball teams occupied the same court.

On Thursday, before a much smaller than expected crowd at Gallagher-Iba Arena, the teams met for the 105th time. The Cowboys, driven by tremendous first-half defense, won 91-73.

Considering that the OSU and TU campuses are separated by only 73 miles, a 12-year gap in the rivalry was ridiculous. These teams should meet every season.

Since last meeting TU, Oklahoma State had faced Northwestern (La.) State nine times, Texas-San Antonio six times, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi six times and North Texas six times.

For the Cowboys, TU is an infinitely more attractive opponent than any of the nondescript foursome listed in the previous paragraph.

The Hurricane was expected to really push OSU on Thursday. Instead, TU was rendered dysfunctional by OSU's defense. During the final minute of the first half, the Hurricane trailed by 28 points.

TU and OSU had not met since Nov. 22, 1996, when the Steve Robinson-coached Hurricane won 72-54 over Eddie Sutton's Cowboys in a Preseason NIT contest at Tulsa's Convention Center.

When these schools last competed, TU's Reynolds Center was not yet open for business.

Bill Clinton was a first-term president.

John Blake was OU's first-year football coach.

In 1996, Travis Ford, now OSU's first-year basketball coach, was only two years removed from his senior season at Kentucky. Doug Wojcik, TU's fourth-year head coach, was an assistant at the U.S. Naval Academy.

At the front end of the time that passed between TU-OSU games, the Golden Hurricane made a successful attempt to hire Bill Self. At the back end, OSU unsuccessfully attempted to hire Bill Self.

Sutton apparently did not see the value of scheduling Tulsa, but OSU athletic director Mike Holder does. It was Holder who initiated dialogue with TU athletic director Bubba Cunningham, and that resulted in a football-basketball agreement.

Thursday's game was the first of four basketball contests, with next year's game to be played at TU's Reynolds Center and the 2010 game at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The 2011 game is expected to be in Tulsa's BOK Center.

The three-game football series begins in 2010, when TU plays in Stillwater. OSU visits Chapman Stadium in 2011 and the Hurricane returns to Boone Pickens Stadium in 2012.

More than 10,000 tickets were distributed for Thursday's game, but the actual attendance was less than 6,800. More than half of the Gallagher-Iba seats were unused.

A faltering economy is going to affect attendance nationwide, but it was startling to see so many empty seats for Tulsa-OSU.

Quick memo to Cowboy fans: You've watched three consecutive OSU teams go down in a first-round NIT flameout, but your team once again seems to have both a pulse and a purpose.

Players who underachieved for Sean Sutton seem energized by the demands of Travis Ford. Cowboy guards Byron Eaton and Terrel Harris were the masters of inconsistency last season. Ford, himself a stud guard at Kentucky, seems to have worked wonders in the OSU backcourt.

A 30-pound weight loss has benefited Eaton, who scorched TU for 26 points and seven assists. Harris (four steals, eight points) was an intense defender.

The Hurricane self-destructed with 16 first-half turnovers, but the final outcome was secondary to the occasion the long-overdue TU-OSU reunion.

Bill, I know you want to blame it OSU for not playing TU for 12 years, but the previous leadership in the Athletic Dept at TU was not the easiest group to work with, which is why they are no longer in charge, and everyone who's anyone knows that. But it is easy to make OSU the bad guy because we're not the underdogs, that's reserved for TU and ORU, and we're not the crown jewel, that's OU, because their SID offcie isn't afraid to throw around media accessibility to the football program along with a little positive reinforcement. And again, everyone who's anyone knows that, too.

You're right about these teams needing to play every season. I also don't see a reason why all 4 division 1 teams don't play each year in an Oklahoma Tournament.

no to playing that little school on 15th street. Win lose or draw , all the benifits are on tu side. And gosh forbide they actually compete or win every decade. When they play more than a bunch of no names and actually have to compete more than once or twice a season, then let's talk.

Cowboy no 1, the last time i drove in Tulsa, that little school was not on 15th street. OSU is just like TU and every other team in the nation with their scheduling. Don't forget OSU plays the Jackson States' to. When I use to coach at Southeastern OK. State University, we played against OSU, which is division 2. So lets not act like this is the BCS. They play just like everyone else in the country, WEAK OPPONENTS! It's all about job security and you can say hey I had a winning season. That works when you're not at a Duke, NC, KU, etc.

Benefits to TU aside. I am an OSU grad and huge fan, but that being said, the last time we played the little team from 15th street we lost by 18. That is not a fluke that is getting smoked. Oh and the last time we played the other little team from Tulsa (ORU) we got our ass whipped too, which was last year. Ford will turn this team around and we will see them in March, but all these teams in OK are very capable of beating each other on any given night. Yes and that means you too Sooner fans.
