Position Update

Free safety

Much has been made about the addition of junior-college transfer Lucien Antoine. However, Antoine has not surpassed senior Quinton Moore at the position.

Moore has been unheralded throughout his OSU career as a reserve.

"Quinton is underappreciated," OSU safeties coach Joe DeForest said. "He has made a lot of plays throughout his career. Now, he has a starting role. I think Quinton is in line for a great year."

News and notes

Defensive depth: Junior linebacker Patrick Lavine says he expects significant improvement in the defense's performance because of two factors — a greater understanding of second-year coordinator Tim Beckman's schemes, along with more depth.

"In previous years, you could see the fatigue out there on the field," Lavine said. "The depth we have on defense now will make a big difference. We have some backups now who could be starters on a different team."

Return to football: After playing pro baseball for five years, backup quarterback Brandon Weeden finally begins his college football career. A redshirt freshman, his 25th birthday is in October. By the midway mark of his senior season, he will be 29.

"When I get together with all of the guys, I feel 18 again," Weeden said. "That's a good thing."

When he was a senior at Edmond Santa Fe High School, the 6-foot-4 Weeden weighed 182 pounds. He now weighs 220.

The senior was a two-year starter at wide receiver in 2005 and 2006 before switching to defense last year. He started every game in 2007 at safety and finished with 78 tackles.

What has been the biggest difference you have seen in your four years at OSU?

Opening Hall of Fame Avenue here in the last few weeks. It makes it easier to get to practice and class now.

What has been your favorite football memory at OSU?

Deflecting the pass away from Michael Crabtree on the last play of the Texas Tech game last year. I replay that play over and over all the time.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Eating too late. I'm eating at midnight or 1 o'clock in the morning. It doesn't matter what time it is. I'm getting something to eat at that hour. Some people go to bed at that time. I'm up eating McDonald's.

Which of your teammates would win an American Idol contest?

Marc Yerry (a reserve deep snapper) can sing really good. We had a rock band tournament this summer and he won. He can sing.

Opponent watch

Texas A&M

Jerrod Johnson battled incumbent Stephen McGee for the starting quarterback position throughout the spring and into preseason. Coach Mike Sherman decided that McGee would remain quarterback.

However, Johnson is not being eliminated from the A&M offense. The 6-foot-5 sophomore is listed as the backup quarterback, but saw work at tight end in a scrimmage Thursday. He caught five passes for 47 yards.
