Beckman's view: Oklahoma State defensive coordinator Tim Beckman always has preferred to coach from the booth on game days.

After one game last season, after the Cowboy defense struggled at Georgia, Beckman moved from the booth to the sideline.

"The players came to me and said they wanted me down on the field," Beckman said. "But my preference is to be upstairs."

For Saturday's season-opening victory against Washington State, Beckman took in the view from the coaches' booth at Qwest Field in Seattle. He watched a strong performance by the Oklahoma State defense. The Cowboys prevailed 39-13 and the Cougars mustered only 196 total yards.

"I was pleased, other than the two (Washington State touchdown drives)," Beckman said. "We look over the film Sunday and get those corrected in practice on Monday."

From a yardage standpoint, Saturday's game was the OSU defense's best performance since Beckman became the coordinator before the 2007 season. Last year, OSU allowed 203 yards against Florida Atlantic.

Away from home: With Saturday's win, the Cowboys have been victorious in four of their last five games played away from Stillwater. OSU hosts Houston at 6:05 p.m. Saturday.

Better depth: The Cowboys brought 68 players to Seattle. According to the final participation report, 57 OSU players saw action in the game. With 10 minutes left in the first half, OSU media relations director Kevin Klintworth reported that 48 players had been on the field for at least one play.

"We're going to play a number of players. We feel better about our depth on defense. Offensively, we'd like to reach the point some time this season where we can play two offensive lines," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "We're not there yet, but we're going to play a number of backs and a number of receivers and rotate the defensive guys in to keep everyone fresh."

Beckman said all but two of his 29 defensive players got at least one snap of action.

Only two first-year freshmen, defensive back Markelle Martin and tight end Jamal Mosley, played in the game.
