Cowboy fans boost ticket sales
Holder says OSU has sold nearly 36,000 season packages.

Holder says OSU has sold nearly 36,000 season packages.

Oklahoma State has streaked beyond last year's season-ticket sales total and could be on course to break the school record.

As of noon Wednesday, OSU had sold nearly 36,000 season tickets for the seven-game 2008 football season. Last year, the total was 33,770.

"I think it's significant, what's happening with ticket sales," OSU athletic director Mike Holder said.

Having vanquished Washington State in last week's opener at Seattle, the Cowboys open their home schedule with Saturday's 6:05 p.m. game against Houston.

It will be OSU's first home date since the Boone Pickens Stadium west-end sections were completed. Seating capacity has increased to 60,000 from last year's 44,700.

In 2004, OSU set school records for average attendance (46,805) and season-ticket sales (38,674). Holder said he believes the current sales campaign could result in a new sales record.

University officials expect a crowd of about 45,000 for the Houston game. If the Cowboys draw 45,000, it will be their largest home crowd since Oct. 29, 2005, when Texas prevailed 47-28 in Stillwater.

No single-game tickets will be made available for the Nov. 29 Bedlam showdown in Stillwater. For Cowboy fans, Bedlam tickets can be purchased only as part of a season-ticket package. The University of Oklahoma will be given 5,000 Bedlam tickets for distribution to its fans.

In 2004, OSU sold 12,000 student season tickets. The students purchased 9,000 season tickets last season, but on average, Holder said, only 5,500 to 6,000 actually attended the games.

This year, Holder indicated, OSU hopes to sell at least 10,000 student season tickets.

"I'll be pleased if we get to that 10,000 number. If we get to 12,000, I think we'd do a dance," Holder said. "More importantly, we need for the students to show up at the games. These students represent our future, for athletics and the institution. If we get them involved in athletics while they're here on campus, there's a greater chance that we'll keep them involved in the future."

The OSU marching band will watch the games from new seats in the west end zone. A total of 24 sections in the west end and on the north side — or nearly 14,000 seats — have been designated for student seating.

"I think most of the enthusiasm and spirit in the stadium will emanate from that northwest corner," Holder said. "People are going to discover that seats in the west end zone may be the best seats in the stadium. Granted, it's a different viewing perspective than most people are accustomed to, but you get a great view of the video board, and the sound system is pointed right at you."

OSU has had unprecedented success in selling club seats. There are 4,000 club seats, and about 3,000 have been claimed for the 2008 season, Holder reported.

Holder said OSU is attempting to generate more business within the city of Stillwater. Traditionally, he said, OSU has sold fewer than 4,000 season tickets to Stillwater residents.

"A winning football team benefits everybody in Stillwater," Holder said.

The West end zone seats may in fact be the best seats in the house (not counting club/luxury boxes) this year. They are the widest (18" versus 14"), they also have a curved seat which is more comfortable. As he mentioned, you can watch the game and view the video board at the same time which is nice. Having the band right there is also a major plus.

It isn't that far fetched that the people in that part of the stadium will have more fun and a better experience than the rest of us.

Now as for viewing football, that is always debatable. There are some that would rather be close to the end zones and some would like to be at the 50. It is all personal opinion. The seats I moved to this year (great seats on the 30 yard line, 14 rows up) were vacated by somebody that wanted to sit elsewhere.

My point was that Holder was moving the students to the end zone was no to their benefit. The students deserve great seats in the north section. It is not right to move into worse seats. My guess is that the students would think any seat from the 40 to the 40 would be better seats than end zone seats. I know you do as you consider 30 yard line seats GREAT. And you had the option for end zone seats

The students are getting a cheap season ticket price, combined with the fact that the seats are still not bad at all anyway. I don't see your point snoop.

Most students I have talked to are not upset about the move. It also helps give those alumni who pay much more then $150 dollars the option of getting better seats. What, did the students suddenly become more important then the alumni who shelve out thousands to get seats? I doubt it. When I went to the games there, we were near the top of the stadium anyway, I would rather move over near the west end zone and have a lower seat.

The same idea applies to the student section at OSU basketball games, and no students complain about those.

Just to give some perspective:

Last season Arkansas was most likely better than OSU during the regular season. At least they were comparable. Student tickets at U of A cost $1 per game. That means this year's student tickets would have cost OSU students $7. Also, Arkansas gave students comparable seats. Even if the students arrived early they didn't get anything between the 40 yard lines and usually had to sit very high in the stands.

Point is if OSU was closer to OU in quality it would draw more people from the state and student tickets would be available at cheaper rates because alums and fans would be buying more season tickets.

That said: Go Pokes! and let's actually win some games to put people in those seats.

Hmmm, 36,000 OSU season ticket holders plus the 5,000 allotted to OU equals 41,000 for Bedlam in a 60,000 seat stadium. Impressive...

I can't afford to buy season tickets, and if I could, I couldn't afford to travel to Stillwater that many times. However, I do like to go to as many games a year as I can. I'm beginning to think that Holder is a sorry SOB. What can only the rich alumni go to bedlam? You have to pay season ticket prices to go to one game? Everyone knows that he panders to the rich alums, but what used to be one of the things I liked best about OSU, is that the cowboys used to not be eletist jerks like ou. In the old days everyone was treated the same, it didn't matter if you were wealthy and flew in from Houston for every game, or if you had to save and scrimp to be able to go to one game to see your beloved cowboys. Oh well, I guess poor alumni like me just don't count anymore. Holder, you suck.

Anymore than the 5000 seats allocated to UO's best Alumni and Students would stink up the place. The number seems adequate, even if we only have 55,000 for Bedlam. UO Students and Alumni should be appreciative that OSU allows them to come into this great stadium. Believe that is what the Big12 requires each team to furnish to visitors.
