At tobacco-free OSU, fans won't be penalized

There currently are no consequences for tobacco use by visitors to the Oklahoma State University campus in Stillwater. Since July 1, the use of tobacco products has been prohibited on the campus.

For faculty members, said Gary Shutt, the university's director of communications, multiple offenses could lead to dismissal. For students, multiple offenses could lead to expulsion.

On Saturday, thousands of Cowboy football fans will be on campus for pregame tailgating activities and to attend the 6:05 p.m. contest against Houston at Boone Pickens Stadium. For several years, tobacco use within the stadium has been prohibited, but some fans may be accustomed to using tobacco while tailgating or roaming elsewhere on campus.

"We expect faculty, students and visitors to comply with the policy," Shutt said.

Shutt said no citations will be issued to campus visitors who use tobacco. University officials may distribute cards to tobacco-using fans, reminding them of the OSU policy.

"If we see people using tobacco, we'll give them a card," said Marty Sargent, an OSU associate athletic director. "It's not a citation. It's an education thing. It's simply a card, reminding them that our campus is tobacco-free.

"We can't possibly really police this. We can only encourage people to not use tobacco on our campus."
