OSU tries to even score in rematch with Troy

OSU quarterback Zac Robinson is shown near the end of the Cowboys' 41-23 loss to Troy last season. Robinson was intercepted twice and lost a fumble in that game, his first start for OSU.

Last week, an Ohio State crowd of 102,989 watched as the Buckeyes were challenged by the Trojans of Troy (Ala.) University.

Troy trailed only 14-10 in the fourth quarter, eventually falling by a 28-10 score. The Trojans limited Ohio State to 309 total yards. If the Trojans weren't rattled by the huge Ohio State crowd, they probably won't be fazed by a Boone Pickens Stadium audience of 50,000.

In a rematch of last year's nationally televised debacle at Troy — when OSU committed five turnovers, gave up 562 yards and lost 41-23 — the Trojans and Cowboys collide at 6:05 p.m. Saturday in Stillwater.

"We have another big-time opponent right in our face — one that I am sure will be excited about playing us," Troy coach Larry Blakeney said. "We expect to find them at their best."

On numerous occasions this week, the Cowboys were asked whether they are motivated by the potential for revenge.

"(Cowboy players) remember the score and how they felt after that football game," OSU defensive coordinator Tim Beckman said. "We as coaches remember how we felt, also. Is it revenge? I don't think that's the case.

"Let's get better. That's the bottom line. Let's play much better than we did two weeks ago, and let's play (significantly) better than we did against Troy last year."

Said OSU coach Mike Gundy: "There's some human instinct for the players to (seek revenge). I would recommend to them that they prepare, study the game plan, practice well and play hard, instead of trying to gain revenge on somebody. I don't know that (a revenge motive) has ever helped anybody win a contest."

OSU is 3-0 and ranked among the top five nationally in scoring (50.7 points per game), rushing (334.3-yard average) and total offense (546 yards per game). OSU is on the brink of making its first Associated Press Top 25 appearance since 2004.

Troy (2-1), a member of the Sun Belt Conference, is No. 11 nationally in total defense and No. 20 in total offense.

"I think it's safe to say that they are the best team we've played so far," OSU quarterback Zac Robinson said.

Robinson made his first start at Troy last season. He was intercepted twice and lost a fumble. He recovered nicely. By season's end, Robinson had broken OSU's school record for single-season total offense.

The Cowboys are attempting to extend three streaks:

Dating to last season's Insight Bowl victory over Indiana, OSU has a four-game win streak (its longest in four years).

OSU has won 13 nonconference home games in a row.

OSU has had at least one 100-yard rusher in 14 straight games.

Troy's Jamie Hampton is a first-year starter at QB, but the sophomore lefty has been effective. He has completed 68 percent of his passes while also averaging 40 rushing yards.

Hampton also addressed the "Cowboy revenge" storyline.

"I think we are just as good as they are, and I am sure they are looking forward to playing us and putting a whipping on us to show that they are Big 12 and we are Sun Belt," Hampton said. "But we want to show them that we are Sun Belt and they are Big 12, and we don't care."

I had to re read this thing. At first I thought it was OHIO STATE playing then reality...Oklahoma State.

"If the Trojans weren't rattled by the huge Ohio State crowd, they probably won't be fazed by a Boone Pickens Stadium audience of 50,000."
