Correction
This headline incorrectly referred to Oklahoma State football attendance. If OSU’s attendance is at least 50,000 on Saturday night, it would be the third time in school history that home attendance exceeded 50,000 for consecutive games.

Correction
This story incorrectly identified the date of Oklahoma State’s 41-26 home win over Oklahoma. The game was Oct. 24, 1998, and was witnessed by a Lewis Field crowd of 50,614.

If OSU-A&M attracts 50,000 or more, it will be the third such attendance figure in school history.

With more than 50,000 tickets sold for Saturday's Texas A&M-Oklahoma State Big 12 football opener, OSU officials are expecting another possible school-record crowd for Saturday's 6:05 p.m. contest at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.

If the game does attract a crowd of at least 50,000, OSU will have drawn two consecutive home crowds of 50,000-plus for only the third time in school history.

"I really think (the stadium renovation) generates excitement, and people show up," said Cowboy coach Mike Gundy, whose unbeaten team is No. 21 in the Associated Press poll and leads the nation in rushing.

A school-record crowd of 52,463 watched last week's 55-24 triumph over Troy (Ala.) University.

On two occasions, the Cowboys drew consecutive home crowds of
at least 50,000. It happened in 1979 (the opponents were Nebraska and Oklahoma) and 1985 (Nebraska and Kansas State).

As of Tuesday, OSU's school-record total of season-ticket sales had increased to 39,100. Last year, OSU sold 33,400 season tickets.

The Boone Pickens Stadium seating capacity now is 60,000. Because of the renovation, the capacity for two years had been 44,700.

OSU had never before averaged more than 46,805 fans in any football season, so there were critics of OSU's decision to expand the stadium to 60,000.

"The improvements that we needed for football dictated that we needed to go to 60,000," Cowboy athletic director Mike Holder said. "The logical place to put that infrastructure was the west end zone, making our stadium a horseshoe — making it a real football stadium.

"What we have now looks like the stadium of a serious competitor in major-college football. That's what we want to be."

OSU's stadium had been the Big 12's smallest. At 60,000, it now is the league's sixth-largest venue.

"The fact that we've got 60,000 seats now, I think it happened for a reason and I think we'll fill it up." Holder said. "I won't predict when that might happen, but it will be sooner than later if our football team continues to win."

OSU is on pace to shatter the school-record average attendance figure of 46,805, set in 2004. The 1988 Cowboys, with a Heisman Trophy tailback in Barry Sanders and a final record of 10-2, averaged 45,880 for six home dates.

"I really think (the stadium renovation) generates excitement, and people show up," Mike Gumby

Gumby is clueless, people show up to watch a successful program. However my prediction is there will be no sell out this year. So by Gumby's comment he needs more renovation, oops I forgot they didn't invest it wisely and ALL construction has stopped

That's pretty cool that we played OU twice on Nov. 9, 1996. Good work on your facts, TW. The 46-26 game was on 10/24/98.

Snoop, if one of OSU's games falls one person short of a sellout because you aren't there, I'd be a happier fan for it. My prediction is that you are lonely, sad little boy. Go ride your tricycle.

snoop, you are clueless. When was the last time you have been to Stillwater? The stadium is continuing the interior construction as scheduled. What has been postponed is the Athletic Village. There is tons of construction going on all over OSU's campus and none of it has "stopped."

And yes, the new stadium generates BOAT LOADS of excitement. OSU now has the nicest stadium in the Big XII. That gets people excited to go see it and to watch a game there. The only thing that may prevent a technical "sell-out" is unsold expensive club seats, of which there are a few hundred still available on the ends...at least that is what it looks like from inside the stadium. People like snoop would never know this, however, because they don't go to games.

Have that, America (10/2/2008 10:47:32 AM)
guys like snoop make up and say things like that to make them feel bigger and important. aww...poor little boy with low self esteem...
Snoop...NONE, 0.0%, of the construction has stopped. Everything that was under construction last week and last month is still going forward as scheduled. Plans that included construction that wasn't going to start untill next year are on hold right now, but far FAR from cancelled or stopped.

But other then that,

What a great venue!! it really is such an amazing turn around from when I was in school there and we had the rust-oleum bowl!! I'm willing to bet that this weeks crowd will beat last week and that the bedlam game will be packed! cant wait.

Snoop,
You are in the minority here. Why do such negative people write in? The Tahlequah Press shut down its reader forum due to one particular negative poster. (Check it out).
As for sports, I grew up in Oklahoma City and was trained to root for OU vs OSU. Now I have lived in Arizona for many years, and I root for ALL of the teams in Oklahoma. I am glad that the Cowboys are doing so well, and often wish I could be there. ESPECIALLY to see the new stadium! Cheer up, Snoop--life is short.

As a student who goes to the stillwater campus 3 times a week I assure you that they are still doing construction. Or was that cement truck I got stuck behind for 5 minutes this morning a figment of my imagination?

NNH-you are an idiot, nice does not bring in fans

I have seen the following players in person, Walt Garrison, Jim Traber, Mike Gundy (both as player and coach) Thurman Thomas and of course Barry Sanders, I would name others but you don't probably remember the likes of Reggie Richardson and Mel Canpbell. I watched games when there was a track around the football field, sat through the ice bowl. I was at the game when a DB nammed Krammer cost OSU a Big 8 title, do you remember the play if so please post it. I have watched the games form the suites to the wooden bleachers in the endzone, noone posting has been to Lewis Field/BPS more than I. The main difference is I refuse to drink the kool-aid, or listen to Gundy's political speak.

I know that a stadium does not bring in fans, a winning team does that. The stadium is great. Is it the best in the Big XII, no. I guess most have not been to Kyle Field or watched a stadium full of rabid Nebraska fans. How many years in a row have those been sold out???, We will not sell it out as a decision was made to have too many expensive seats. As we win this may change. Go to GIA what was once a total sell now has seats, it's a great arena, but it's know Allen Field house or Cameron.

Oh and Patrica no OSU loyal fans would ever cheer for OU, so you can blah, blah etc until your mouth is tired. And remember life is short, go see a game at BPS then and only then can you speak from experieence
