Onward and upward: OSU passes Mizzou test, vaults to No. 8

OSU passes Mizzou test, vaults to No. 8

During Mike Gundy's Sunday media teleconference, a national writer presented this question to the Oklahoma State football coach: Can you compete for a national championship?

Gundy responded by saying, "I don't think that's even worth talking about."

The question was asked because, for the time being, OSU has worked its way into the discussion of viable national contenders.

On Saturday, the Cowboys recorded a 28-23 nationally televised road victory over then-No. 3 Missouri. When the Associated Press Top 25 was updated on Sunday, OSU had vaulted from No. 17 to No. 8. The surge of nine spots is the greatest one-week rankings advance in school history.

"It was a great opportunity on a national stage," said OSU safety-linebacker Andre Sexton, who against Missouri recorded 13 tackles and intercepted a Chase Daniel pass.

"What happened to (Cowboy players) last night, they'll never forget," Gundy said. "They'll remember that the rest of their lives."

In the coaches poll, OSU is No. 10. Missouri dropped to No. 11 in the AP rankings and No. 12 in the coaches poll.

"Everybody likes to be told they're doing good," Gundy said. "People now are saying Oklahoma State football is doing well."

OSU makes its first top 10 appearance since 1988, when it achieved a midseason ranking of No. 10. The current No. 8 ranking is the Cowboys' highest since November 1985, when they ascended to No. 7.

The Cowboys are 6-0 overall, 2-0 in the Big 12. This week, in a 2 p.m. Saturday conference game at Stillwater, OSU faces Baylor. If the Cowboys win, they will be 7-0 for only the second time in school history. The 1945 OSU team finished with a 9-0 mark.

The first Bowl Championship Series standings will be released next Sunday.

Through three games, the Cowboys were not ranked in the AP Top 25.

After beating Troy on Sept. 27, they were 21st. After beating Texas A&M on Oct. 4, they were 17th.

In addressing his players before the Missouri kickoff, Gundy said his message was this: "You deserve to be here. You're as deserving as the other team to have an opportunity to win this game."

Gundy's Sunday teleconference usually involves only media members who cover the Cowboys on a regular basis.

Participating in the post-Missouri Sunday teleconference were writers representing the New York Times, Sports Illustrated, ESPN.com, CBSSports.com and the Sporting News.

"They have stories to write and they have to ask those questions (about national contention)," Gundy said. "We're going to concern ourselves with this week. I know people get tired of coaches saying that, but we're not good enough to look past anybody.

"We're very excited about where we're at and very excited to be ranked. I'm not trying to push that to the side, but I'm trying to keep our staff and the players focused to the best of my ability."

Gee, A good, solid ground game is a very effective ‘tool for the spread offense. College Defenses are “built” to contain, control, and limit passing yardage & completions.
OSU is a great running team!

Poise beats statistics: McCoy & Robinson are the two best QB’s in the Big 12!
Mobile, makes few mistakes, & rarely allows “negative” yardage for the team.

Texas/OSU winner Big 12 Championship?

How are them ‘Gooner fans goin’ to feel losing to both Texas & OSU the same yr.?

PRCowboy...simple. OSU was not predicted to do what they have done so far this year, so when the TV contracts came out, OSU-Baylor was definately NOT on the radar as a game to televise. It has nothing to do with respect. It isn't for a couple more weeks that the TV games become more flexible.

I'm happy for the Cowboys. Maybe they can bring a championship to Oklahoma, as it's seeming less likely that OU can do it after that collapse in the second half.

i pay a lot of money to cox each month for my 400 plus digital channels. why can't they show the game on channel 268 or 402? (you get the point) i don't care if the OSU Baylor game wasn't on the radar in the off season, they are in the top 10 for pete's sake. make an adjustment!!!! you know the game is being filmed since we see the hilights on the 10 o'clock news. come on, get in the 21st century. show the flippin' game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh, and a few more things: they are undefeated, knocked off a potential number 1 team, practically shut down the leading candidate for the heisman and made him look ridiculous, defensively surprised the entire nation and did it all during an away game.

T Bone wants to sell out the stadium first before his home games get on TV, and Mike Holder probably requires the TV crews to buy season tickets before they get in to televise the game. }:-)

well, honestly, its time for some sellouts. This team deserves to play before a sold out stadium. I have no idea why those last 8k seats are going unsat in...probably a combination of bad pricing, reluctance to believe in our team, but its time to show up.
For the game against Baylor and the rest of the season. Go Pokes, beat Baylor!

I hate to say it people because it has been our Trump card against OU for the longest time BUT...OSU needs fairweather fans. THERE! I SAID IT! It's true! We need the fans who aren't alumni. We need the fans that are on the fence on which in-state school to root for. We even need fans who are fans only because we are winning. Who can disagree at this point?

I disagree meximike...

I take a lot of pride in the fact that theres about a 95% chance you went to OSU if your a fan of the cowboys...

OU can keep their wal-mart fan base.

MexiMike- OSU doesn't need the bandwagon fan base OU has. I'm proud of our fans. What good would it do, sell more T Shirts? Ticket prices are already too high. I was in Vegas over the weekend and watched the OU TX game at JZ's at the Venetian. TX fans were a class act. The Sooner fans embarassed me being from Oklahoma.

Have that, I'm one of those 5% who aren't alumni, but I did put two daughters through OSU. That makes me an investor with a stake in the school ;) or Alumni once removed?

Mobro...

yeah...you have a direct personal relationship to the university...

and I'm certainly not bashing our 5-10% of fans that didn't go to school there...not at all...I know quite a few of those fans and they are good people.

I'm just saying that I don't want that 5-10% to be reversed where its 90-95% walmart fans that have never set foot on campus...like it is with OU.

we have plenty of OSU fans in the state to fill the stadium every week...its just a matter of people going to the games....
