OSU debuts at No. 6 in BCS

For the first time in the 11-season history of the Bowl Championship Series, the Oklahoma State football team has a stake in the process.

The Cowboys were at the No. 6 spot in the initial BCS standings, which were released on Sunday. In the Associated Press Top 25, OSU ascended one position — from No. 8 to No. 7.

Cowboy coach Mike Gundy seemed oblivious to it all.

"I didn't even know (the BCS standings) came out today," Gundy said during his Sunday teleconference with reporters. "I don't pay much to attention to rankings or any of that stuff."

Understandably, Gundy's focus is committed to the next challenge.

On Saturday, the Cowboys (7-0 overall, 3-0 Big 12) play at Texas (7-0, 3-0). The 2:30 p.m. game will be televised on KTUL-8.

The Longhorns are No. 1 in the AP poll and BCS standings after crushing Missouri 56-31. OSU remained undefeated with a 34-6 homecoming win over Baylor. The Cowboys have not faced a top-ranked opponent since 2003, when they lost at Oklahoma.

When the new AP poll was released on Sunday, the Cowboys had climbed one position, supplanting Texas Tech at No. 7. In spite of a road victory — 43-25 at Texas A&M — the Red Raiders dropped to No. 8.

With a 56-31 trouncing of Missouri, Texas strengthened its grip on the No. 1 ranking. A week ago, the Longhorns received 39 first-place votes from the AP media panel. Second-ranked Alabama got 26 first-place votes. This week, Texas is the unanimous No. 1, after receiving all 65 first-place votes.

In the USA Today coaches poll, OSU jumped two spots to No. 8.

The BCS is a selection system intended to match the top two teams in the national championship game. The system also determines matchups for the BCS Bowls — the Sugar Bowl, Rose Bowl, Orange Bowl and Fiesta Bowl.

The BCS standings formula consists of three components — the Harris Poll, the coaches poll and the computer rankings. All three are weighted one-third in the rankings formula.
