Initiating the rookie: Oklahoma State basketball coach Travis Ford has said that freshman guard Keiton Page has All-Big 12 potential. During the team's media day Monday, Ford said Page will be a great player and said people will still be talking about Page 30 years from now.

In the meanwhile, Page is getting a rocky dose of freshman orientation. Page is being asked to defend senior point guard Byron Eaton in practice and Ford said Eaton is "having his way right now." Ford believes Page will benefit from the experience.

"Things he is struggling at now are things he will get better at," the coach said.

Ford said Page, second-leading career scorer in Oklahoma high school history, will play a lot of minutes this season.

Small ball: Ford predicted last week that the Cowboys, who have a surplus of perimeter players, could use a four-guard lineup. He sounded even more sure about it Monday.

"You can write that one down," he said. "It could be five guards."

Shining moment: Ford said junior college transfer Malcoln Kirkland "played by far the best he has played" during a recent scrimmage. Kirkland, a 6-8 forward, would have been a sophomore at UA-Fort Smith this season, but left junior college early because OSU was in need of size.

Shorthanded: Ford said his team was down to nine healthy scholarship players in recent practices, but he said the attitude and work ethic of players has been tremendous.

Ford indicated that the injuries are minor. He said the Cowboys wouldn't have been able to practice if not for students who survived a tryout to join the team as walk-ons. Four of them participated in a preseason bash during homecoming weekend. Ford said the survivors have helped the team. He said he finally learned all their names.

Making a spectacle of himself: Junior guard Obi Muonelo is wearing black Clark Kent (or Drew Carey) type eyeglasses when he is not on the basketball court. Terrel Harris said the glasses are popular on the East and West coasts.
