Receiver had a serious spinal injury last year.

STILLWATER – Damian Davis had two words for his fellow wide receiver Artrell Woods late Saturday afternoon.

“About time,” Davis said after Woods made a 7-yard reception late in the fourth quarter of Oklahoma State’s 59-17 win over Iowa State.

Nearly 16 months after a horrifying weight room accident that almost paralyzed him, Woods made his first reception. It was more than a late addition to the final statistics.

It was evidence Woods can finally show something for everything he’s gone through since July 13, 2007.

Woods grabbed reserve quarterback Alex Cate’s 4-yard throw with 2:24 left and ran 3 more yards upfield before running out of bounds.

Fans inside Boone Pickens Stadium responded with a standing ovation for the sophomore receiver.

“It’s a big relief. I didn’t think I was going to get a standing ovation like I did,”Woods said. “It really felt welcoming and it felt great. I didn’t think it would take this long, but it happens.”

Before dislocating and fracturing vertebrae and injuring his spinal cord two summers ago in a weight training session, Woods was a potential playmaking receiver.

His return after the injury has been tedious. He returned to practice last spring, but didn’t go through contact drills.

Against Houston this season, he sprained the medial collateral ligament on his left knee while blocking.

He missed the next three games and has been listed at third team on the depth chart.

“It was good for him to get that catch,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said. “Artie’s not an experienced player. Before he got injured, he hadn’t played very much. He’s been working his way back, and he’s been tremendous for us.”
