QB remains humble despite his popularity

STILLWATER — Let’s take a pregnant pause to recognize Oklahoma State’s achievements.
OSU owns its second-best record ever after nine games. The Cowboys reached the eight-win plateau at the earliest date in school history. They own a spot in the BCS top 10. That’s big-time stuff.
By the way, the pause was pregnant in honor of the guy who plays the glory position. During fan appreciation day in August, quarterback Zac Robinson was asked to autograph a pregnant belly.
“I kind of just was forced into it because the husband was the one egging it on,” he said. “I felt obligated.”
You get those kind of requests when you are, as teammate Seb Clements says, the poster boy for everything OSU has accomplished.
Robinson cemented his status as big man on campus Saturday by producing the second-best total offense number (461 yards) in school history in OSU’s most lopsided victory ever over Iowa State.
Let’s be clear. The job of big man on campus – BMOC – does not S-T-I-N-K.
“Without a doubt,” said co-o3ensive coordinator Trooper Taylor earlier this week. “He can’t even go to the movies right now without being like Elvis Presley.”
Taylor also said Robinson was getting mobbed like Presley during a walk around campus earlier this season.
“I had to pretend I was his bodyguard to get him out,” Taylor said.
“Everybody was pulling and tugging at him. Finally I told him to take his hat and pull it down tight so we can be kind of incognito.”
Blue eyes. Pretty boy.
Teammate Andre Sexton has used those words to describe Robinson and threw out a new label after the game at Texas. When a Longhorn player menaced Robinson, Sexton charged to the quarterback’s defense.
“I was just making sure that nothing happens to our golden child,” Sexton said.
But men don’t just want to fight for Robinson.Men want to be him (“I’m pretty happy with being myself, but I’m sure Zac is doing all right,” said lineman Steve Denning), gals want to be with him, “hundreds and hundreds” of people ask permission to be Facebook friends and fans proudly wear No. 11 jerseys.
If this winning stu3 keeps up, Robinson won’t just be signing pregnant stomachs and (another true story) foreheads of fans’ children.
People will name babies after him, and yes, that sort of thing occurs because it happened to OSU basketball coach Travis Ford, who was a BMOC when he led Kentucky to a Final Four.
About this gals-want-to-be-with- Zac thing, back o3, sister. He’s got a girlfriend and – doesn’t this seem perfect? – Jackie Shoup is on OSU’s pom squad. Shoup is no bandwagon jumper. “I dated him before he was the star quarterback,” she said.
Shoup noticed last season that, at least in other people’s eyes, her boyfriend was transformed from Zac to “the quarterback.”
All of a sudden, strangers wanted to say “hi” and “good luck.” Nowadays, fans want autographs and ask him to pose for photos. But fan reaction hasn’t been so ridiculous that they avoid going out.
Shoup is of the opinion that being a BMOC hasn’t changed Robinson.
A former BMOC, ex-OSU quarterback Mike Gundy, said, “Zac has got a great temperament and a great personality. He’s very down to earth.
He’s got a great background and a lot of values and morals instilled in him. He will handle it fine.”
Robinson often talks about his faith. Taylor said Christian kids sometimes have di1culty gaining followers because teammates “think you are a goody two-shoes or you think you are above them. But these kids will follow Zac. If he said jump out that window, there would be 95 guys right behind him.”
Zack from “Saved By The Bell” never had it as good as Zac from the same locker room as T.J. Bell. But Robinson is apparently not the man who has everything. The radio in his vehicle gets only one station (93.7 in Stillwater). Considering the circumstances, it’s surprising his radio doesn’t play all Elvis, all the time.
“Zac has got it made because he’s in a place where everybody thinks he is king,” Taylor said. “And, to be honest, if you had to pick a king, you would want that guy because he is as humble and as good a kid as you will find. The best compliment I could give him is, if my daughter was between 18 and 22, I would make her marry him.”
The only thing the BMOC is grooming for now is a high-stakes game in Lubbock.
