OSU puts up big points in UNT rout

STILLWATER — Oklahoma State scratched a seven-year itch in Travis Ford's second game as head coach.

For the first time in seven years, three OSU players scored 20 or more points on the same night. James Anderson scored 28 points, Terrel Harris got 21 and freshman Keiton Page added a career-best 20 in a 100-88 triumph Monday over North Texas at Gallagher-Iba Arena.

The last time OSU had three players crack the 20-point barrier was Jan. 8, 2001, against Iowa State, when Fredrik Jonzen and Maurice Baker scored 26 each and Victor Williams added 20.

If the tempo is to Ford's liking in future games, perhaps OSU will get up and down the court often enough to achieve additional statistical milestones.

But there were plenty of numbers that were not to Ford's liking. For instance, OSU was outrebounded 57-43 and gave up 24 offensive rebounds that led to 33 second-chance points. Also, the Cowboys committed 34 fouls and sent the Mean Green to the free throw line 50 times.

"Just some wild-looking stats," Ford said. "Then you look down and we win by 12. It was a strange game. I'm glad we won, but it was very sloppy."

Fortunately for the Cowboys, Anderson lived up to a nickname. Ford said he calls Anderson "Big Game James." The coach challenged Anderson to play big. Said Ford, "I told him, 'I have heard all these things about you. It's time for you to show me what you are made of and time for you to be Big Game James. It's time for you to let loose.' "

Anderson scored his most points since getting 29 against Prairie View in his collegiate debut last season. Anderson became reliant on 3-point shooting during the course of his rookie season, but he scored inside and outside against North Texas and got fouled enough to make a career-best nine free throws.

Harris has scored 20 or more points in three consecutive games for the first time in his career. He ended last season with a 20-point performance in an NIT loss and scored 20 in a season opener against Texas-San Antonio.

Obi Muonelo added 14 points for the Cowboys, who improved to 2-0.

North Texas, fresh off its first back-to-back 20-win seasons in 30 years, dropped to 1-1.

The Mean Green beat OSU 82-73 in Denton last season.
